There is nothing like having a second home where you can head whenever you are in need of a holiday! And it is even better if the home is a beautiful villa tucked away in the most beautiful and serene part of Italy, surrounded by rolling hills and unblemished beauty. Calvi dell'Umbria is exactly such a place. It is a small town, situated to the south of Umbria, in the Terni province. Its immense natural beauty and ancient history have earned it the nick name ‘happy door’! The evidence of inhabitation in this region dates back to the Bronze Age, and there is ample proof of the village existing during Roman times. It gained its current character in the middle ages and today it is as if it is still frozen in time.

The weather in Italy is quite mild throughout the year, making it extremely popular among holiday makers. The Umbrian region is not located on the coast but lies surrounded by other coastal regions in the narrow peninsular part of Italy. It therefore tends to be slightly less humid in summer. Rainfall is quite scarce and rarely seen outside of a few spells in autumn. It does not snow in Umbria, but mountain tops can be covered in ice during winters. Apart from that, the weather of Calvi dell'Umbria is similar to that of the rest of southern Italy. Expect temperatures during the hottest summer months to hit the thirties degrees Celsius.

Italian paradise!

5 of 5
We stayed at Villa Elefanti for one week in May with our big family of 7 (2 adults and 5 teenagers). Arriving at the house, the only word that we could utter was 'WOW'. And the 'wows' got bigger and bigger as we explored the house and grounds. We could not believe our luck to have found such a gem. The house is perfectly positioned with 360 degree views - the photos are amazing but the reality is a million times better. Everywhere you look there are stunning views of the countryside, of beautiful villages and the mountains in the distance. Outside the property, we were spoilt for choice as to where to sit - all terraces and the pool area are beautiful for enjoying alfresco dining. Inside the property, the standard of decor is top spec. We could not believe the beauty of the furniture, decorations, ornaments. The rooms are huge, as are the 'many' bathrooms. We were spoiled for choice as to where to sit inside too (not that we sat inside much). We didn't even have chance to use the lower sitting room or dining room. The house is perfectly equipped, containing everything you would have at home (and more in our case!). The equipment is also of a very high standard. We were simply in heaven all week. The beauty of the house made us very lazy and we only ventured out a couple of times: once to Rome on the train from Stimi - very easy! We chose the day that forecast thunder storms in Stimi. Amusing as we returned to the house to rain and thunder, when the electricity had shorted out. Luckily thanks to the plethora of information provided by Adrian, we were able to sort out the electric gates and also return the power to the house. Aside from that, we only ventured out to visit the local supermarkets, and to Da Lina and RosMarino restaurants - both amazing! We didn't want to waste a minute our week away from this paradise. My sister and I don't speak Italian, but thanks to 2 months of Italian podcasts and a phrase book, we were able to get by throughout the week using our very stilted Italian. The locals were so friendly (and amused/impressed) - despite being in true Italy, we never once felt out of place or unwelcome. Our negative is that we think that Villa Elefanti has probably ruined every future holiday we will have, as nothing will ever be as perfect. We are now desperately researching how buy property abroad, because we would love to have somewhere even 1% as nice as this place. Thank you Adrian and Lena so much. We hope to be back someday. x

Gorgeous views and a beautiful home

5 of 5
We had such a great stay. Lovely and friendly owner and really helpful guide when we arrived and during our stay. Thank you both. A beautiful home with a stunning view. Great pool and lots of really well thought out spaces to enjoy and make the most of the weather and view. Really restful.
