What to see in Bologna, Italy

The streets of Bologna are a wonderful place to walk, and although the bulky architecture is not the most beautiful in Italy, there is a real charm to the city centre. When thinking of what to see in Bologna, the twin squares in the centre of town are the perfect place to start. Piazza del Nettuno and Piazza Maggiore are the real heart of the city, surrounded by excellent shopping streets and atmospheric pavement cafes where, locals, students and visitors all congregate throughout the day. The Neptune Fountain which stands in the centre is one of the cities must important symbols, and must be included on any guide of what to see in Bologna. The collection of black and white photographs adorning the walls of the Piazza del Nettuno are a stark reminder of the price paid by Bologna during World War II.

From its position between the beaches of the Adriatic Coast and the peaks of the Apennine Mountains, holidays to Bologna are also a nature lovers dream. Walking along the coastal paths and making the short journey from Bologna accommodation to the powder soft sands of the Emilia Romagna coastline are well worth the time, as the coastline is almost perfect, with endless miles of pristine beaches to choose from. Walking, riding and mountain biking in the Apennines also provides wonderful day trips from self catering Bologna villas, apartments and holiday houses.

Gastronomy is Bologna’s jewel in the crown. Food is taken very seriously, and simply shopping for ingredients from your self catering Bologna accommodation is a real spectacle. Food shops are meticulously presented and the treasures found within are of a quality unheard of in most countries. The food is quite exceptional, especially the delicacies of Parmesan cheese and Parma ham. There are some excellent restaurants and cafes to frequent, and if you take self catering Bologna accommodation, cookery courses and local markets are a perfect day’s entertainment.

Weather in Bologna, Italy

Although Bologna doesn’t suffer from tourist overcrowding at any time of year like many of Italy’s famous cities, the summer months are still the most popular. Average monthly temperatures in July and August are fantastically hot, making the near-by beaches almost irresistible as average monthly temperatures can climb to over 30˚C. Spring and autumn are some of the best times to visit Bologna accommodation, as some of the sting is taken out of the heat of the day, yet it remains marvellously warm.

Wonderfully clean, well designed and in excellent location.

This was the first time we had used HomeAway and we had a wonderful time staying in Marta and Roberto's apartment. We have never stayed anywhere so well designed and spotlessly clean. It was a great base for visiting Bologna and the surrounding areas. Marta and Roberto were very friendly and provided us with so much information, thinking of every little detail. We would highly recommend this to apartment to others. Thank you very much.

Escape to the country

5 of 5
From the description and the photographs this was our first choice for a place to stay as a base to explore Bologna and nearby towns. It was an excellent choice. Fine views of the hills and a very well equipped and well looked-after property. Wildlife (including birds and deer) to watch from the windows or the gardens. Silvia welcomed us warmly on arrival and gave us some helpful suggestions when we told her of our planned visits. 20 minutes drive into town for local drivers - 25 minutes for us! Highly recommended.
