Make a holiday villa in Atri your home away from home

Atri is perched on top of a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Founded by the Greeks in the 4th century BC it was later to become an important Roman colony. Historians believe the Adriatic is named after Atri. This ancient town delights with its labyrinth of narrow lanes, ancient churches, palaces and monuments. Beautiful piazzas are lined with cafés and restaurants, and for sun worshippers, there are plenty of beaches to choose from.

HomeAway has secured a clutch of beautiful holiday villas in Atri with stunning views of the Apennine Mountains and countryside. All lie within easy reach of the town and the beaches. These holiday properties are suitable for large groups and feature a host of essentials such as freezers, coffee makers and towels. Wi-Fi is often available, and some even boast their own olive groves. Atri holiday apartments are equally well equipped and enjoy good positions near the town and beaches. Lovers of the sand and surf can also find great beaches at Guilianova, where HomeAway also has a good range of holiday properties. The resort is just 36 kilometres from Atri, but has a charm all its own.

Things to do

-Historic monuments: Atri hosts a wealth of important historic monuments. Among the most notable are the 13th-century Duomo – the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Inside are 15th-century frescoes by Abruzzi painter Andrea de Litio. The Palace of the Dukes Acquaviva was built in 1395 on top of earlier Roman foundations and is situated on the highest point of the town.

-Beaches: Atri is a 15-minute drive away from the beaches of Silvi and Pinento. The latter is named after the pine trees that provide shade on its long, wide sandy expanses. Many of Pinento’s beaches have earned Blue Flag status for their cleanliness, the quality of the water and services.

-Family attractions: Keeping the whole family entertained is often one of the biggest challenges on holiday. Atri has it covered. Close to the historic centre is a three-hectare municipal park and garden with a soccer field and basketball court. There are lawns, fountains, tree-lined paths, a renovated 1930s Italian Garden and the ruins of a fortress that was once a summer palace for bishops.

-Festivals: The town loves its festivals and traditions and the visitor with a holiday villa in Atri can find numerous celebrations throughout the year. There are several in August including La Maggiolata. Here, a train of wagons drawn by oxen accompany folk groups to parade through the street. December sees the ancient Festival of Faugni where fires of dry canes are lit in front of the cathedral at dawn.

Weather in Atri

Atri is in the Abruzzo region and as such its climate is affected by its proximity to the Adriatic Coast and the Apennine mountains. In June and July temperatures can climb to over 30ºC and the days are filled with plenty of sunshine. November receives the most rainfall.

Travel to Atri

Atri is 36 kilometres from Abruzzo International Airport which is based just outside of Pescara. The flight hub is served by many European cities. From there, good road connections take visitors to their Atri holiday apartments. Although there is a good inter-city bus service in and around Atri, hire cars are the most common means of transport for tourists.

Fabulous house with incredible views. Utterly peaceful and relaxing!

5 of 5
We would go back here any time! The house is very clean and well-equipped with a good kitchen, excellent beds and nice dining table and lounge. Most of all it is very private and utterly peaceful. It feels like stepping into another world even though it is only a couple of hundred metres from the road. The views are completely stunning! We found that it worked much better than actually being at the beach because the air is fresher away from the coast and it's much easier to sleep well. In fact very well! We usually had morning coffee on the balcony and evening drink in the porch looking straight out at the mountains. We went to the beach at Pineto about 10km away, and shopping and restaurants were easy in Atri. There's a good cathedral there and even a theatre right on the square which is good for coffee.

Fantastic!!

I Tre Laghi Sant Agnese is the most wonderful place we have stayed in. Beautifully appointed accommodation stylish and you feel at home as soon as you walk in the door. A lovely touch was the welcome pack including a bottle of wine from the region. The location is superb the views stunning close to the sea and the mountains. The jewel in the crown is the warm welcome we received from Piero & Letizia. Nothing was too much trouble, as we had brought our dog with us he required a vet check before returning to England not only did Letizia arrange this she came with me to help and translate. It is a very special place and we feel very privileged to have stayed there.
