Make a holiday rental property or villa in Asti, Italy your home away from home

Asti is a beautiful city in Piedmont, Italy, which has been completely overlooked by tourists, and remains one of the most staggering, unspoilt cities in Italy. Few places in Italy remain untouched by the influence of mass tourism, yet this beautiful town remains gloriously natural, unspoilt and authentic. Although it is best known for its Asti wines, there is so much more to discover.

Things to do in Asti, Italy

The oldest of Italy’s famous Palio horse races occurs through the streets of Asti. Dating back to the 13th century, the Asti Palio occurs on the third Sunday in September, with the parties, processions and pageantry starting on the Thursday. This is a magnificent time to be staying in a self catering Asti holiday rental, and the best time to really immerse yourself in the unspoilt, authentic excitement of an Italian festival. Horses and jockeys in the race represent the different districts of the town, and each district takes the support of their rider very seriously, further adding to the electric atmosphere that blankets the town during the festival. There are in fact a huge range of festivals and events throughout the summer months in Asti. June, July and August see a great range of theatrical, musical and dance festivals whilst September is an extravaganza of culture, with Asti wine festivals, medieval feasts and of course, the Palio.

Although many visitors still take Asti accommodation in an attempt to locate the fabled hidden gold of Asti, further clues to its whereabouts are very hard to come by. Legend has it that the Romany King, Kopi Kennana, had treasure of immeasurable wealth buried with him in the River Po. The rest of the town does hide a great range of historic treasures though. There are some 120 medieval towers scattered throughout Asti, as well as elegant renaissance palaces, broad boulevards and charming chapels which date back centuries.

Asti is also a gastronomic hotspot. The famous sparkling Asti wines are readily available throughout the town, from the gourmet restaurants to the atmospheric cafes, and the regions truffles are some of the most sought after in the whole of Italy. There are two separate weekly food markets to enjoy, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, selling all manner of produce.

The countryside that surrounds Asti is perfectly unspoilt, and attracts walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers from all corners of Europe to explore the secluded, natural surroundings.

Places to visit on holiday in Asti, Italy

Turin is a wonderful city to explore, especially if you take the time on your way to or from the airport from your self catering Asti holiday rental villa. The gracious buildings and elegant atmosphere make Turin a real delight to explore, but it is the enormous wealth of beautiful baroque masterpieces, fine restaurants and rich culture that really excite visitors to Turin.

Travel to Asti, Italy

Reaching a holiday rental property in Asti is relatively straight forward from the UK. There are regular British Airways and Ryanair flights to Turin Airport (TRN), which arrive from London, Bristol (BRS) and Dublin (DUB). From Turin, the 110km journey can be completed by train, with 4 hourly services connecting the two cities.

Gorgeous home gorgeous setting

5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautifully renovated home. Once the fog finally cleared we got to enjoy the gorgeous mountain and valley views. The house is completely outfitted for anything you might need.

Beautiful, convenient, and well-located. The perfect based for exploring Piemonte

5 of 5
It was a privilege to stay in this beautifully renovated house, ideally located for exploring Piemonte. The setting was perfect for us: rural enough to have a quiet break with breathtaking views of the valley, and yet close enough to drive to major destinations such as Alba, Asti, Turin, Barolo and Bra. The house is one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed. A medieval building immediately beside an ancient church, the house has been lovingly restored and decorated in modern, stylish taste. The kitchen was equipped with most things we needed, and we prepared meals at home most nights, using up the truffle we bought in Alba and the wines discovered on our journeys. Chiara made us feel most welcome on our arrival; the added touches of local wines and homemade apricot jam and cake made us feel instantly at home. On the middle floor, there is a comfortable sitting room with television that we never used, preferring instead to spend our time upstairs or down. We ate our meals in the small garden – the weather was mild enough even in late October – however, the multitude of timer-activated garden lights meant that there was little chance of stargazing and there was little privacy due to the comings and goings of the neighbors living close by. Nevertheless, everyone was friendly enough and it did truly feel like we were living as the locals do. One of the previous guests wrote in the guestbook that they were taken out dancing by the family next door. Carpe diem! The bedroom had a comfortable bed and wardrobe large enough for a week’s worth of clothes. The star attraction in that room was the balcony window, which we left wide open all night and from which we could watch the sun rise and set. We sat on the balcony every night with a glass of grappa, a blissful experience. The area seemed completely insect-free, so windows were left wide open when we were at home. The bathroom was modern and clean and many complimentary provisions were supplied. Europeans will be delighted with the bidet. The glass ceiling that Marco created to separate the bathroom from the ancient timbered roof above was a marvel of design. One real advantage to this place that wasn’t made clear in the write-up beforehand was the ideal parking very close to the house. The walk to the car was indeed short. It was a lovely place to stay and a wonderful base for exploring things both near (the excellent pizzeria in town) and further afield. I’d definitely return.
