Things to do

-Museums: Arezzo is home to a clutch of fascinating museums. The Archaeological Museum houses mosaics, vases, funerary urns and other relics from Etruscan and Roman times and is situated alongside the Roman amphitheatre. The Diocesan Museum above the sacristy of the cathedral has a collection of religious objects that includes crucifixes from the 13th century and frescoes by Spinello Aretino.

-Art and culture: The artistic highlight of any visit to Arezzo is the Church of San Francesco. Inside is a Renaissance masterpiece, a set of frescoes by Piero della Francesca called ‘La Leggenda della Vera Croce’ ( or The Legend of the True Cross). Art from the Middle Ages onwards can be seen in the Museo Statale d'Arte Medievale e Moderna, housed in a 15th-century palace.

-Food and drink: Visitors with Arezzo holiday homes soon discover that the town’s restaurants love to show off the best of the area’s regional cuisines. These include sautéed chicken giblets, stuffed pheasants and acquacotta (cooked water), a classic soup with egg, cheese, tomatoes and fried onions.

-Outdoor activities: Unspoilt nature and verdant, cultivated countryside are hallmarks of Arezzo and there are myriad ways to enjoy the outdoors. They include walks and picnics by the River Arno and hiking, biking and horseback riding in Foreste Casentinesi Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park. During the winter some of the park’s paths can be traversed on skis. Families with children can make a beeline for holiday rentals in Costa Degli Etrusci where there are exceptional beaches.

-Festivals: The annual Wave Festival is a big draw in the summer. This free musical celebration features singers and groups from the Italian and international pop music scene and is held in July. The festival lasts for six days and there are a large number of musical events in venues all over town.

We came to stay here from London with our three young children (9, 7 and 4) and had the most wonderful time. The owner Claudia and her husband were extremely helpful in advance of our trip and answered all our queries promptly; when we arrived they were most welcoming to our family. The villa is set in a beautifully maintained garden with a fantastic pool which the kids used every day. The house itself is extremely well equipped and spacious. We would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to escape city life and immerse themselves in a truly Tuscan idyll.

A perfect villa for a larger family or group of friends

A perfect place to stay for a larger family of different age groups requiring separate bedrooms. In good weather there is a choice of locations around the house to sit in the sun or in the shade while enjoying the view. And of course there is the swimming pool. In bad weather the house and its porches provide ample space to relax. Both the owner and the caretaker go out of their way to make your stay a success. Arezzo is well located for day trips by car or by train.
