Make a holiday rental home or villa in Apricale, Italy your home away from home

High up in the mountains of Liguria, the tiny comune of Apricale offers one of the finest destinations for those seeking a rural Italian break. Apricale is the epitome of a medieval hilltop town, being located in the foothills of the Alpes Martimes around 350 metres above sea level, and despite being just 20 minutes away from the coast can sometimes feel like a million miles away due to its secluded location. Self-catering accommodation in Apricale includes traditional stone cottages – the perfect base for a relaxing break.

Things to do in Apricale, Italy

Apricale has a population of fewer than 600 people and English is not widely spoken around the village. This means that a holiday in Apricale is the perfect opportunity to brush up on your Italian language skills, experience a traditional way of life and immerse yourself in the local community during your stay. A little Italian can go a long way in this part of ‘Real Italy’.

The village centre has altered little over the centuries, and consists mainly of old stone buildings and narrow, winding streets known as carugi. The town square, Piazza del Borgo, is the central meeting place and where you will find the vast majority of restaurants, cafes and bars. Many of these offer outside seating, and are great for a romantic meal or glass of local wine on a balmy summer evening.

With Apricale being located in such a rural area, the use of a hire car is strongly advised to make the most of your stay in the village. Small supermarkets and shops can be reached on foot, but as soon as you wish to venture outside of the village you will discover that motorized transport becomes a necessity. A hire car can easily be pre-booked and collected from the airport of your choice upon arrival.

Places to visit on holiday in Apricale, Italy

Despite the rural nature of Apricale, the coastline of the Italian Riviera can be reached within twenty minutes by car. Bordighera (17km) is a particularly nice spot, and successfully combines the secluded feel of the area with the traditional tourist draws of sandy beaches and clear waters. Further along the coast are the more modern attractions of the Cote d’Azur, with the exclusive resort of Monte Carlo (24km) less than an hour from Apricale.

Weather in Apricale, Italy

The province of Imperia experiences warm summer weather and mild temperatures during winter months, so there is not really a ‘bad’ time for a holiday in Apricale. July and August are the hottest months, with a daily high temperature of 28C, whilst December and January are the coolest.

Flights to Apricale, Italy

The main options for getting to your Apricale holiday rental villa are flights to either Nice Cote d’Azur Airport (NCE) or Genoa Airport (GOA). The distances from these airports to Apricale are 43km and 111km respectively, with most UK flights either departing from London Gatwick or London Stansted.

Bohemian hideaway in the Ligurian hills

4 of 5
Great location away from the hustle and bustle of the towns and yet a short drive from Dolcedo, which has a good range of restaurants from high end to cheap and easy pizza. The apartment is a 20-30 minute drive away from beaches and coastal towns. The apartment is very characterful and well stocked with items your average tourist will need. If you are looking for minimalist with all mod cons this may not be the apartment for you. Our hosts were extremely helpful and full of local information and advice. If you need a tranquil nights sleep in full quiet, please note that the church bells are very close to the property and ring throughout the night for some unknown reason they chime twice in the space of 5 mins ... so 12 am is quite interesting!! We did get used to it 😊 Overall a great area, with lots to see and do, no matter what your tastes are. The apartment is a great base to explore from or just sit on the veranda and take in the beautiful views.
