The Amelia area has been the favoured holiday resort for the Italian elite since the Emperor Aureliano started using it as a retreat. With three ports along the River Tiber, Amelia became a very wealthy region, the legacy of which can be seen throughout the area due to the stunning architecture found across the ancient hill towns as well as the astonishing number of archaeological discoveries. The Amelia area has some of the Umbria’s oldest fortified towns, and anyone with even a fleeting interest in medieval life will be right at home in self catering Amelia accommodation.

Places to visit on holiday in Amelia, Italy

The town of Amelia itself sit on top of a rock outcrop, overlooking the Umbrian countryside and the gently flowing River Tevere. The city has ancient origins, with the enormous defensive walls still standing proud, dating back to the 6th century BC. The town has risen to global fame due to its cuisine, which can be sampled in a huge range of world class restaurants throughout the town.

Just a few kilometres away is the town of Avigliano Umbro, which is home to the astonishing Porta Vecchia, a magnificently decorated symbol of the town’s long history. The Church of Sant’Egidio, which is adorned with beautiful frescos and the staggeringly robust Silano Castle are certainly worth visiting from any self catering Amelia accommodation.

The town of Giove is the centre of a huge number of archaeological discoveries, although nothing had been found relating to the goddess Jupiter, who the town is reportedly named after, which casts serious doubts over the supposed origins of Giove. However, there is still plenty to entertain visitors, not least the fantastic range of restaurants which fill the age old streets.

Travel to Amelia, Italy

The tiny Ancona Airport (AOI) is located just an hour from the centre of Amelia, and Ryanair have made it amazingly easy to reach your Amelia self catering accommodation form the UK with direct flights leaving from Stansted (STN) and Liverpool (LPL). Alternatively, Rome Airport (FCO) receives a huge quantity of inbound flights from the UK, and is just 100km from any of the self catering villas in Amelia.

      The property was everything we hoped, very clean and good facilities. The children loved the pool! The hostess was very friendly and spoke excellent English. We had a fantastic time would recommend to anyone.
