Make a holiday rental home or villa in Ameglia, Italy your home away from home

Lying just 11km from the capital of the region, La Spezia, Ameglia accommodation is a good alternative to staying just outside of the busy city centre. Over the last couple of decades tourism has increased in Ameglia, and the quality of amenities is now more than suitable for a destination of such beauty – in the heart of a regional park, close to the sea and positioned to the delightful backdrop of mountains and countryside.

Things to do in Ameglia, Italy

Ameglia lies on the banks of the Magra River, and near the mouth of the river is the remains of an ancient Roman Villa that dates back to 1BC. Another sight of historical interest is the Church of San Pietro, which dates back to the 15th century, and there are several other old buildings to keep history and culture lovers happy.

The village centre remains much the same as it always has been; small, traditional and steeped in history. Ameglia is closely linked to Bocca di Magra, and a walk between the two is an enjoyable ten minute exercise. This is the part of town where you will find the fishermen out in force, going about their daily duties and bringing in the catches, and also where you can enjoy a meal or drink near the waterfront.

One of the most visited points of interest in Ameglia is the Orto Botanico di Montemarcello, a botanical garden and nature preserve, which itself is also in the Montemarcello Magra Regional Park. As well as being home to a diverse range of plant and animal life, the nature preserve is much-visited due to its lofty position 365 metres above sea level, which offers panoramic views out over the Ligurian countryside.

Places to visit on holiday in Ameglia, Italy

After you have explored the delights of Ameglia you will likely wish to venture out and see what else the province of La Spezia has to offer. The answer is plenty; Lerici (8km) is one of the closest towns and notable for its towering castle which is now home to a palaeontology museum, whilst the city of La Spezia has all of the shops, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants that a self-caterer could possibly require, to go with its centuries-old castles and churches.

Weather in Ameglia, Italy

Hot summers and mild winters characterise the local climate, so you will never freeze to death in Ameglia. Temperatures of well above 30C are possible on the hottest of summer days, but the summer months average out at a more pleasant 28C. Showers are common in this part of Liguria, with spring and autumn being the rainiest seasons.

The airport receives flights from the UK in the shape of Ryanair, British Airways, Jet2.com and Thomson Airways services, with journey time from the UK to Pisa being around an hour and a half.

Fantastic!

This is a lovely apartment in a nice residential area of La Spezia. The apartment is clean and has all of the facilities you need plus a nice outside area where we had breakfast etc. The location is good as it is around a 15 minute walk from the train station. We chose La Spezia as a base for exploring the Cinque Terre which is a short train ride from the city. The owner, Renata, was extremely welcoming and helpful throughout the stay. She treated us to limoncello and biscuits plus her homemade fig jam and fresh figs which was all delicious plus she also gave us some of the best gelato we have ever tasted. In addition, Renata very kindly reserved us a table at a nearby restaurant and she also treated us to some farinata at the restaurant which is a delicious dish not to be missed when visiting the region! Renata was always available if we ever needed her and she was very helpful in suggesting places for us to visit during the day. All in all, it was a fantastic holiday and we would definitely return to this apartment!

We loved Montemarcello. From the moment we arrived people were happy to help us find our way. When the local shop had no eggs, a lady went home and returned with two from her own chickens and refused to take any money from us. The cafe in the square was a real treat. Our dog hung out with Olivia the cafe Jack Russell, whilst we enjoyed octopus salad. There are several restaurants in the village, many open out of season. The house is a haven. The photos don't really do it justice. The main bedroom is flooded with light and has views out across the bay. You are in the middle of the village just a stones throw from the square, cafe and shop. The garden is very pretty with access from the living room downstairs as well as doors opening onto it from the first floor. The interior of the house is quirky but stylish. Everything you need in the kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine. If you are looking to stay around cinque terre, stay in Montemarcello. Lovely restaurants, fabulous views, close enough to all the sights but not over run with tourists.
