Make a holiday villa in Acqualagna your home away from home

Acqualagna is one of the main Italian centres for truffles, the fleshy fungus eaten as a   delicacy in many parts of the world. The town’s truffle festivals are internationally famous and attract visitors from all over the world.  Upon arrival, they are greeted by an area of sublime natural beauty.  Acqualagna is backed by some spectacular scenery with the slopes of Monte Pietralata and Monte Paganuccio to the northeast and the Apennine peaks of Monte Catria and Monte Nerone to the southwest.

The countryside is the star attraction and HomeAway’s collection of holiday villas in Acqualagna offer sumptuous views, some of which can be enjoyed as guests splash around in their own private pools. These exceptional villas are ideal for large families and groups, featuring spacious rooms, televisions, stereos and DVD players.  Comfortable and well-appointed Acqualagna holiday apartments are also available, some situated inside large villas.  For those who love the countryside, holiday rentals in Macerata are a great choice for any following visit.  The town is 72 kilometres from Acqualagna and is renowned for the verdant fields on its doorstep.

Things to do

-Events: There is a handful of truffle fairs held throughout the year in Acqualagna with the biggest being the National Truffle Fair.  For two weeks from the end of October there is a host of truffle-based activities including numerous tasting sessions.  Here visitors sample local truffles and truffle products as well as those from other Italian regions.

-Historic sights: Just outside the town is the Abbey of San Vincenzo at Furlo, built before the 11th century.  Next to it are the remains of an ancient viaduct.  A little further away is the Church of the Madonna del Pietriccio that’s decorated in part with 14th-century frescoes.

-Outdoors: Nearby is the picturesque Furlo Gorge, where limestone cliffs drop into the Candigliano River and rare flora and fauna can be glimpsed.  For many centuries this was an important trade route along the Via Flaminia that linked Rome to Rimini.  At one point the ancient road passes through a tunnel that was built during Emperor Vespasian’s time in 76 AD.

-Family activities: One of the most entertaining parts of any stay in Acqualagna holiday villas is to go searching for truffles.  Organised truffle hunting tours are popular seasonal tourist pastimes where foraging for the special fungus takes place in the countryside under the guidance of an expert.

Weather in Acqualagna

Acqualagna has a mixture of Mediterranean and continental climates. The summers are warm with average July temperatures above 23°C.  The winters are cold and characterised by rain and fog and sometimes strong winds.  October is the wettest month and January the coldest.

Travel to Acqualagna

Acqualagna is in the central Italian region of Marche.  It is served by Raffaello Sanzio Airport in Ancona that hosts national and international flights. The area enjoys good road connections north and south and a railway runs along the Adriatic coastline.  Bus services are infrequent, so many visitors with an Acqualagna holiday apartment rent a car for the duration of their stay.

Spacious apartment, close to town centre

5 of 5
We had an excellent fortnight. Cagli is a charming, friendly and unspoilt town. There are many interesting towns and villages as well as lovely mountain walks and a beautiful gorge very nearby; Simone (the proprietor, who speaks very good English) is extremely helpful and informative in assisting guests to explore the area and try local specialities - all his suggestions to us were very successful. Urbino is of course a World Heritage site and is easily accessible, without mentioning Assisi, Gubbio and other tourist magnets to the west. The apartment is spacious and attractive, very quiet except for an occasional car or motor bike passing by. It is quite dark at the street side but has big sunny windows on the garden side. The garden is accessed around the side of the house. The apartment does not have WiFi which might disconcert some people; however there is free WiFi in the town square, free PCs in the town library and also WiFi in the nearest cafe. There is one very sloping parking space for the two apartment; we preferred to find a space (which was never a problem for a medium sized car) a little further away. The outstanding features for us were the attractions of Cagli as a location and the availability of Simone and his parents to talk to, which gave us more insight into the surroundings and people's lives.
