Irish holidays in a holiday rental home or holiday cottage in County Leitrim - your home away from home

County Leitrim is an inland county in the province of Connacht in Ireland although it has a short length of Atlantic coastline. It is a tranquil and lovely unspoiled area with rolling hills, pastures, deep valleys and mountains. Maps are available from Leitrim County Council.

Places to holiday in County Leitrim

If you look at a county map you will see that Leitrim has a history of mining iron ore, sandstone and coal mining. The last coal mine was closed in 1990. These days Leitrim is a popular tourism destination with visitors staying in hotels, guesthouses, farm cottages and self-catering holiday accommodation.

This county has the best of both worlds with a rural community that’s never in a rush and the technology of the 21st century. Country cottages are never far from a large urban area and they give you far more freedom to explore than a hotel. Ballinamore is the main crossing point on the Yellow River and is a flourishing rural centre for the neighbouring parishes of Corraleehan, Aughnasheelin, Fenagh, Aughawillan, and Drumreilly. Carrick on Shannon is a centre for pleasure cruising and boating and its Costello chapel is the second smallest chapel, in the world.

Drumshanbo is below Slieve Anierin and the Arigna Mountains. It has many geological remains of a group of marine animals dating back over hundreds of millions of years. Manorhamilton is located in the centre of the seven enchanting green North Leitrim Glens, a beautiful hill walking area. Other places to holiday in Leitrim include Rooskey, Dromahair, Leitrim Village and Kinlough.

Lough Allen has amazing views and you can hire a day boat or arrange a cruiser trip.
