Make a holiday rental home or accommodation in Iceland your home away from home

Iceland is a sensational country that cannot possibly be accurately described in words, and by far the most beautiful in Europe. Mother Nature's phenomenal playground is truly magical, and although that word is bounded around far too easily, Iceland is possibly the only place in the world to which the word genuinely applies. The gushing geezers, staggering rock formations, giant waterfalls, ancient volcanoes, vast glaciers and awe-inspiring Northern Lights of Iceland combine in a landscape that would seem far-fetched in a fantasy novel.

Things to do in Iceland

Iceland holidays never cease to amaze. The dazzling, unspoilt wildernesses that you will see on Iceland holidays are absolutely sublime, and one of the best ways to explore is on foot, walking in Iceland. As well as walking in Iceland, there are many ways to explore the sensational scenery, whether on a horse, by 4x4 or by snowmobile. After a long day exploring the countryside, a quick visit to the Blue Lagoon, a man made reservoir of naturally hot geothermal waters, which are thought to have healing powers, is a magnificent way to relax and mull-over all that you have seen whilst on your Iceland tours.

There is just so much to do and so many tourist attractions in Iceland to discover. The geysers, waterfalls and natural hot pools are a joy to discover, and the Iceland Northern Lights have to be seen to be believed during the winter months. Salmon fishing holidays in Iceland are some of the most exciting in the world and there is nowhere finer to go whale watching, which is one of the most famous things to do on an Iceland trip. White water rafting holidays to Iceland are certainly not for the feint hearted either!

There are endless natural tourist attractions in Iceland. The Northern Lights are simply unbelievable, and should be seen by everyone during their lifetime. The Vatnojokull Glacier, Gullfoss Waterfall, Stokkur Geyser and Domadulur Valley should feature on any tours of Iceland.

Places to visit on holiday in Iceland

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland, and a magnificent place to be based during your Iceland trips. Reykjavik is a city that cannot fail to endear. The sub-arctic city is absolutely incredible, and the sunny summer nights are a joy, yet there are always reminders that life can be harsh here.

Weather in Iceland

The summer in Iceland is far warmer than you may imagine. Running from May until September, the Iceland summer sees daily temperatures reaching around 15°C, as the snow melts and the meadows are filled with flowers and the sounds of birds. This is the best time for holidays walking in Iceland, and even during winter, daily temperatures are usually a little above freezing.

Travel to Iceland

It is fantastically easy to start Iceland holidays. Flights to Iceland arrive from London, Glasgow (GLA) and Manchester (MAN) as well as Edinburgh in Scotland. Iceland is not as far from England or any part of the UK as you might think, taking just a couple of hours to get you there.

Contemporary accommodation with fine views across the fjord

4 of 5
The house is of contemporary design (a definite plus for us) and one of a group of three detached houses set into a steep west facing slope overlooking the Eyafjord. We stayed 8 nights at the end of June and enjoyed watching the midnight sunsets, passing cruise ships, whale watching vessels, bird life and occasional spouting and diving whales from the terrace. Don't forget your binoculars if you go. The property is located close enough to Akureyri to take advantage of the supermarkets and other facilities (we especially enjoyed the aviation museum and Botanic Gardens). We self catered and thought the kitchen adequate for most things but would have found a conventional oven useful. We also missed not having a washing machine. We really enjoyed using the hot tub which is under folding doors on the terrace but found the doors heavy to use and you have to be careful to prop them open properly. Nollur is within reasonable driving distance of most of the best known attractions in northern Iceland including the volcanic areas and waterfalls around Lake Myvatn and the nearby whale watching centres at Grenavik and Husavik. There is an interesting folk museum at nearby Laufas with Icelandic turf "Hobbit houses". A really good place to stay, close to the bright lights of Aukureyri and the main route around Iceland but far enough off the beaten track to be quiet and secluded. The self catering facilities help reduce the eye watering cost of visiting Iceland and the views, terrace and hot tub mean that it would be possible to spend your whole visit just relaxing there.

Great penthouse

5 of 5
We really enjoyed this apartment as it was close to airport and Reykjavik. Stayed two nights but found it so strange that sun shone so late. Great views of harbour. Well finished apartment and enjoyed the complimentary snacks. Would have likedblack out blinds in bedrooms as do much daylight. Enjoyed the bbq upstairs and views.
