Make a self catering cottage or holiday rental in Drenthe, Netherlands your home away from home

Drenthe is the cycling capital of the Netherlands. It is in the northeast of the country and is the most scenic and least populated area of the Netherlands. The area is criss-crossed with a network of cycle paths and the quiet country roads making it perfect for cycling, especially as the region is quite flat. Old farms and villages stand as they have for centuries, and the forests and heath provide delightful scenery for exploring. It is the perfect place to unwind with a Drenthe self catering holiday cottage.

Things to Do in Drenthe

Drenthe is best known for cycling and there are many places where you can hire a bicycle for an hour, or for the whole week. It is also ideal for walking and hiking or for taking scenic driving tours. Horseback riding is also popular through the forests and old bridle paths. The countryside offers a host of sights including the old “hunebedden” which are grave markers. The area lends itself perfectly to bird spotting and nature watching, particularly in the marshes of the wildlife sanctuary De Weerribben. Go punting (a boat like a gondola) on the waterways around Giethoorn .

Places to Visit in Drenthe

Cycle to Havelte past the Saxon farms and ride along the Havelterberg to the two dolmen - huge stones stacked on top of each other as grave markers. Also, in the Koelingsveld between Vledder and Doldersum, look for the burial mounds dating from 1000 to 500 years BC. Visit the Smilde forests near Diever and explore some of the scenic villages around Lhee. Orvelte offers a fascinating look at the history of Drenthe as the whole village is a living museum. The Dairy Factory is a fascinating place to visit. See how organic cheese is made, just as it was when the factory opened in 1899, then try some tasty samples. Hijkerveld is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary in one of the most scenic areas around your Drenthe holiday rental. Groningen should also be visited as it is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands.

Great Holiday

5 of 5
We had a lovely holiday staying on this farm. The accomodation was great. A super sized bathroom and bedroom. The bed was the best we have ever had in a "holiday cottage" There were logs abundant for us to light the wood stove which we needed on two occasions as the temperature dropped in the evening. Our hosts were very pleasant and made us very welcome. Should we ever return to that part of Holland again we shall definitely stay there.

Totally relaxing, comfortable, homely and quiet rural house.

Great place to stay for our family of five. We took bikes and loved exploring the local cycleways and used them for shopping trips to nearby shops as well as further afield for visits. The local open air swimming pool is less than 1km away with kids pool, springboard and adult lanes so something for all of us. Very steep stairs to upstairs twin bedroom so watch younger ones. The local cycling is either on dedicated paths or roads with very light traffic - a complete contrast to the UK. Some of the woodland paths are criss crossed by more adventurous mountain bike paths and they are worth a diversion if you are used to it and have a suitable bike. The house is comfortable, welcoming and cool in summer. It felt homely and lived in and we were very happy to stay there.
