Make a Holiday Rental Villa in Skala, Greece, Your Home Away From Home

The village of Skala is located in the south of the Ionian island of Cephalonia, around 39 km away from the main town on the island, Argostoli. The modern-day village only dates back to the 1956 and this is because the more historic settlement in this area before was levelled by a devastating earthquake in 1953. The village’s name translates from Greek as meaning ‘stairs’ and this is to do with how the old buildings looked as though they formed stairs on the hillside. Unfortunately, these buildings have now been completely lost. Holidays in Skala are extremely popular and this has led to a great resort having developed with a well-established tourist infrastructure. This means there is a good choice of self catering accommodation available in Skala with many properties boasting their own private swimming pool.

Just one word of caution, however, there is a steep shelf into the sea and this can prove to be a problem for elderly or less-able people, especially when exiting the sea. Other activities to consider include tennis, beach volleyball, coastal walks, inland hiking treks and golf.

Places to Visit on Holiday in Skala, Greece

The resort of Skala is very self-sufficient for people spending their holidays in the area, and there is nothing better than sitting outside a café, with a cooling beverage and watching the world go by. However, there are some great tourist attractions for you to visit and many of these are located close to the capital of Cephalonia, Argostoli. These include the old fishing village of Fiskardo, Assos Village, Lake Mellisani and a fascinating cave system to explore at Drogarati. The town of Argostoli is well worth spending some time in and the central square is especially popular with its good choice of cafés, shops and restaurants.

Beautiful modern and clean villa

5 of 5
This was our first time at the villa, which we were so overwhelmed with how modern and clean it was. We even had bath robes each, toiletries in the bathrooms and fresh water and juices in the fridge when we arrived. Bedrooms were really clean and both bedrooms had a en-suite shower room, which was great when you have two young teenage girls who hog the shower all morning. The view from our balcony was amazing seeing the see right over to Zante. Maria (lovely lady) came along everyday to make sure we had clean towels and made up our beds, didn't expect that. Pool was ample big enough for us all. We were in walking distance to the village and tried out most of the restaurants. Ery was really helpful with recommendations on places to go and see. There were leaflets in the villa and we took advantage of the boat trip which took us round the right side of the island where we visited the underground river Melissani right up to Fiskardo. We also visited Argostoli where we saw the turtles. Also, when we had to check-in for our return trip to the UK, Maria's shop was really helpful in printing off our boarding passes. What a lovely start to visiting Greece and what lovely friendly people they are in Kefalonia. This will definitely not be our last visit to this villa.

Charming Cottage and Wonderful Hosts

5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hestia Cottage. The rental is well-equipped, charmingly decorated, and situated in a quiet village away from the crowded touristy spots. It is well-situated near the airport and main roads to the main town of Argostoli and to any of the main excursion destinations on the island. We enjoyed lovely scenic day trips to nearly every spot on the island and had time for daily, refreshing dips in the sea. Mick and Maria are fantastic hosts who welcomed us warmly to the island, provided is with fresh tomatoes from their garden, and offered us an amazing beach tour informing us of their conservation work protecting the nests of the island's sea turtles. We do not hesitate to recommend this rental and its hosts highly for a very comfortable, relaxing stay in Kefalonia!
