Located on the eastern end of Crete, Greece, Sitia is a historical city of great importance on the island. Known as one of the most beautiful places in Crete, due to its wonderfully impressive historic buildings and almost Caribbean coastline, Sitia is a fantastic place to relax in the Greek sun, with clean, tidy streets full of atmospheric cafes, traditional tavernas and enough shopping and nightlife to keep every member of the family happy throughout your Sitia holiday.

Things to do in Sitia, Greece

The beach at Sitia is a wonderful place to spend the day. The soft, golden sands of Sitia beach are amazingly soft beneath your feet and the bathing is safe, but for better places from which to swim, try taking a local bus north, and you will very soon start to see beaches that could take your breath away. The main beach is within walking distance of any self catering Sitia accommodation, and due to is great length, there are rarely crowds.

The great range of historical monuments in the Sitia region, which date from throughout the ages, are explained and explored wonderfully well in the Archaeological Museum of Sitia, which is a fantastic place to start your historical explorations of the region. The museum is home to many extraordinary artefacts from across eastern Crete, but will so many places to explore, you can’t restrict your historical tour to the museum alone. The Roman fish tanks, Hellenic docks on the Tripitos Peninsula and ancient sacrificial sites of Sitia are certainly worth exploration.

Sitia really comes to life in the evenings, especially around the old port. There is a fantastic atmosphere during the evenings, especially as the locals love to dress up in the evenings before heading down to the beach bars that surround the port. Although tourism does thrive in Sitia, Crete, the majority of restaurants, bars and shops are aimed at the locals, perfect for those wishing to truly explore local lifestyles and cultures. The restaurants of Sitia are awash with local delicacies, especially olives, oils and wines. Those wishing to really explore the culinary joys of the region should head to a Sitia property at the end of August, when the Sultana Festival brings the whole town to its knees with plentiful wine and constant dancing.

The region’s capital, Agios Nikalaos is a wonderful place to visit from a holiday rental apartment in Sitia, Greece. The nightlife is excellent, and for anyone wishing to have a good night or a full day of shopping, the short journey to Agios Nikolaos is well worth it.

Temperatures regularly reach into the low 30’s (?C) during the summer months, but thankfully for those of us who prefer temperatures hot but not scorching, summer conditions rarely soar much further. The evenings remain wonderfully balmy, perfect for long evening strolls along the beach or having a meal and glass of local wine out on the balcony of your self catering Sitia apartment, watching the sun disappear over the watery horizon.

Very nice holiday home with a large and clean pool

5 of 5
Our stay in this holiday villa was really great and we enjoyed it very much. The house is located close to nice restaurants and different shops in Makrigialos. We also loved to have our breakfast at the house terrace each morning and our kids enjoyed the nice and clean pool. Rosemary provided us with all needed and helpful information about the house and the infrastructure. It was very convenient to have a private parking lot nearby. Everything went very well and we were completely satisfied.

Stunning views, private villas and utterly relaxin

5 of 5
What an amazing week we have just had at Tholos Bay Villas. Before we even got there we felt so looked after by the owners; they gave us so much information on the villas and surrounding area and made sure we had everything we needed, including buying us a blender so we could puree baby food!! When we arrived (at midnight!!) we were met by Bob and Jill, who look after the villas. They gave us an excellent tour of the villas and made us feel right at home. We settled in well, however the next morning we had a power cut that lasted the morning. Bob arrived within an hour and lent us a gas stove to use - so efficient! They were so helpful. We visited with friends who stayed in the other villa which was perfect. We both have young children so having our own space was ideal. They were close enough for us to link up a baby monitor between the two so we could eat together in the evenings. The villas were very well equipped for self catering including a brilliant american fridge freezer which had filtered ice cold water and ice. The BBQ was also excellent and we had many lovely meals outside. Plenty of areas for sitting in the sun and shade plus the sun loungers were very comfy! Not much time to relax due to our 3 year old and 6 month old keeping us on our toes but we loved playing in the pool (which was little chilly but we got used to it). There was also a lot of pool toys which was great for the kids and board games for us adults to enjoy in the evenings. The weather for early October was perfect - 25-30 degress - and a very welcome breeze made being outside in the sun very comfortable. The hot tub at the smaller villa was such a treat and easy to alter the temperature so the children could go in. We enjoyed exploring the local villages and especially liked going to a little fishing village called Mochlos. Excellent taverna's and stunning stoney beach (small) with crystal clear waters. Our three year old loved swimming in the sea and it was so warm. We also ate at the taverna at Tholos beach which was fun - more of a van/shack than a taverna but still had some yummy food, cold beers and raki! There are good supermarkets in Agios Nikolaos and Lerapetra but the local one in Kavousi was a little 'random' so I wouldn't rely on it for your weekly shop. All in all an extremely relaxing and fun week and we are already thinking of planning a trip back! We would definitely recommend staying here to anyone wanting a relaxing, private holiday.

Small but perfectly formed accommodation

5 of 5
We are a family of four 2 adults, a teenager and a child and recently stayed at Neal & Debra's apartment. The apartment had everything we needed and was exactly as described. Neal was extremely helpful from initial enquiry through to our actual stay. He was informative giving advice on car hire and places to visit during our stay. We had a wonderful holiday and Areti and her management team at Lagada Bay could not do enough from arranging transport for evenings out to ordering morning coffee and pastries from the local bakery. Makri Gialos is a beautiful unspoilt resort - a step back in time where our youngest daughter enjoyed a paddle in the sea in between the courses of our evening meal at the Golden Beach taverna. Will definitely be returning.
