Things to do

-Beaches. Sifnos features some sublime Blue Flag beaches. Platis Gialos is considered one of the best, lying on the island’s south coast and boasting a long strip of sand next to calm and clear turquoise waters. A slightly quieter, though no less attractive beach can be found at the Bay of Vathi, on Sifnos’ west coast.

-Walking. There are numerous unforgettable walks to enjoy on the island. One of the best can be found at Moni Fyrogion – from here you’ll be able to follow a scenic path through a natural preserve up to the Prophitis Helias Monastery, which stands 700 metres above sea level in a spectacular location.

-Gastronomy. Sifnos’ cuisine is linked to its ancient and famous pottery industry, with many dishes slow-cooked in clay cookware. One such is chickpea soup, which is left on for the whole night before serving, or Mastelo, mutton in wine, cooked in a lidless ceramic container.

-History. At several locations around Sifnos you’ll be able to discover remnants pointing to the island’s ancient history. You can take a walking tour to see what’s left of the millennia-old gold and silver mines, while at Aghios Andreas you can see the remnants of a Mycaenean citadel, which sit atop a hills and command a memorable view of the sea.

-Boating. Hiring a motorboat for a day is a great way to explore the island’s coastline. This way you’ll be able to reach bays and coves that are inaccessible on land, swimming and snorkelling in pristine clear waters. On the east of Sifnos you’ll also get excellent views of the ancient Agios Sostis mines.

Weather in Sifnos

Sifnos is an island with a Mediterranean climate. This brings warm dry weather for as many as six months of the year. Temperatures reach the low-30s during the day in July and August, but you can expect pleasantly warm weather if you arrive at a Sifnos apartment early as May, or as late as October. Rainfall is uncommon, expect in the winter months – December and January get about six inches each, while daily highs at this time of year usually reach the low-teens.

Travel to Sifnos

If you’re flying to your beach holiday home in Sifnos then the most convenient route would be to fly to the neighbouring islands of Mykonos (JMK) or Santorini (JTR), with services offered by a number of airlines flying from UK cities. From these destinations you’ll be able to catch ferries to Kamares, on the west coast of Sifnos. There are also ferries linking Sifnos with Piraeus on the mainland, with a normal liner taking five hours and a high-speed Catamaran arriving in around 2.5 hours.

Wonderful

This is an exceptional house - we loved it. The views are stunning & the owners made it extra special by replenishing toiletries & towels as well as bringing breakfast treats (including cake, chocolate & delicious figs) daily, which was lovely. The house itself was charming, cosy & well positioned for all the bars, restaurants & shops. A great base for exploring the island too. I cannot recommend this property highly enough. It was just wonderful.

Idyllic - fantastic location. Still felt unspoilt and relaxed in the height of the tourist season.

Our week here was perfect. 2 great quality clean beaches within 2-3 mins walk. Perfect for swimming even if you have a young family. Relaxed vibe but still enough restaurants to keep it interesting for a week. A reasonably stocked shop and a very reliable bus. Very fond memories. Property gorgeous. Hosts really helpful and communication fantastic.
