Make a holiday rental villa or apartment in Rethymnon, Crete your home away from home

Rethymnon is the capital of the prefecture of the same name. Found on the rocky north coast of Crete, Rethymnon lies on the eastern edge of the largest beach in Crete, which stretches for 12km towards Chania. If you are lucky enough to rent a property in Rethymnon, Crete, you will get a great feeling for the island, as this is one of the most vibrant and hospitable places to take holiday accommodation in Crete.

Things to do on holiday to Rethymnon, Crete

There is a real elegance to Rethymnon, created by the arched doors, ancient buildings and 16th century villas which make up the town. There are a great number of Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins adorning the streets of Rethymnon, making walking tours of the town a genuine delight. The Fortezza Castle at the top of the town is one of the largest attractions, but the Rimondi Fountain, Venitian Loggia and Neratzes Mosque are all incredible sites to visit from a villa or apartment in Rethymnon. If you would like to further understand the history and culture of your surroundings before succumbing to the appeal of the coastline, the Folklore and History Museum is a magnificent place to visit. There is also an excellently presented Archaeological Museum to visit from a self catering property in Rethymnon, Crete.

During the long, warm evenings you will enjoy from a property in Rethymnon, Crete, the town centre will offer a huge range of entertainment possibilities. The pubs and clubs which surround the harbour are the centre of the more excitable nightlife, but the beaches are lined with a range of more relaxed, atmospheric bars. There are a range of really good restaurants in Rethymnon, creating international delicacies and local dishes, but for a truly world class meal, the seafood restaurants in Rethymnon are excellent.

However, you would be hard pushed to ignore the allure of the beach during your stay in self catering property in Rethymnon, Crete. The beach which stretches out in front of the town is lined with a promenade which lies in the shade of hundreds of palm trees, swaying in the reliable sea breezes that keep the air fresh and the windsurfers flying across the bay. The sand and shingle beaches which stretch almost as far as the eye can see are ideal for lazy holidays in the sun, or as a base for windsurfing, sailing and jet-skiing.

Places to visit on holiday to Rethymnon, Crete

Although it is on Crete’s south Coast, Agia Paraskevi is very easy to reach from a Rethymnon apartment. This region is one of the thinnest parts of Crete, and the atmosphere in the south of the island is noticeably different, and well worth investigation. Agia Paraskevi is a tiny fishing village, which was abandoned for many years. Now, having been slowly re-built, the village is an idyllic place to see, on top of a steep cliff overlooking the sea.

Weather in Rethymnon, Crete

Sea temperatures are wonderfully warm throughout much of the summer, reaching up to 26˚C in August. May until October sees temperatures reaching well into the mid 30’s (˚C), whilst in winter, temperatures still hover around 22˚C in winter days.

Travel to Rethymnon, Crete

A property in Rethymnon, Crete, is almost equi-distant from Chania Airport (CHQ) and Heraklion Airport (HER), which are served from the UK by ThomsonFly and First Choice Airways respectively. There are a larger range of departure points in the UK for flights arriving into Heraklion Airport, but there are a great range of transfer options from both, meaning there should be no problems in reaching your Rethymnon apartments.

Beautiful location with fabulous veiws

5 of 5
We had a fantastic stay at this lovely Villa. The views are truly beautiful. The pool is fantastic and the villa is lovely, clean and comfortable. We stayed for 2 weeks with 3 adults and 3 children (aged 13, 11 and 8), the children spent hours in the fabulous pool. If your looking for a private villa in the country with a short 10 minute drive from shops, tavernas and the beach then this is perfect. Valia and Mr Nikos were very helpful and accommodating, from us booking our holiday, to us heading home. Thank you both for a wonderful stay on your beautiful island.

Gorgeous property

4 of 5
The welcome from Mrs Sophie was wonderful, what a delightful lady who could possibly be one of the sweetest people I've ever met! The Villa is fab and the facilities were everything you need and more, very spacious and of course the spectacular views. For me the downside was the location, it's a fabulous property set in the middle of a pretty run down area, the beach is lovely to look at from the property, it's very quiet, each villa has its own beds and umbrellas which is great but when out swimming you look back at the beach and it all looks a bit grim. The walk into town is along a busy road and not too pretty either. Having said that once in town it's lovely. The main beach at the other side of town is much more touristy, cleaner and prettier with flowers and palms but then it's much busier - so it's swings and roundabouts I guess? Overall we were really happy and I'm sure as things pick up and more surrounding properties are updated then the area will be more inviting. It wouldn't stop me returning but some small changes locally could give a real wow factor. Lovely Mrs Sophie should use her gorgeous charm to challenge the authorities for a clean up! Great comms from Valia and we also liked the maid who was really friendly and helpful.
