Things to do

Archaeological Museum of Rethymno:

Visit the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, operated by the National Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities Conservancy. This museum is organized by excavation site, in chronological order, ranging from the Neolithic to the Roman period. The museum is situated in the Fortezza, within the pentagon-shaped building near the main entrance.

Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno:

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno includes handcrafted works like rugs, hand-sewn lace, and jewellery. The pieces reflect a way of life that predates technology. The museum is located west of Arkadiou and south of Konnou Paleogou.

Museum of Sea Life at Rethymno:

The Museum of Sea Life shows one of Greece's most important collections of fish, molluscs, and sponges native to the area. The museum is located on Arabatzoglou Street in the old part of town. The building is a former abbey.

Fortezza of Rethymno:

The Fortezza of Rethymno is one of the most well-preserved castles in Crete and houses a well-known Wine Festival every July. This impressive fortress is located on one of the headlands above the city, where it was incredibly useful as a military presence. Once inside, the Ibrahim Han Mosque is an absolute must-see.

Nerandzes Mosque:

The Nerandzes Mosque forms an impressive silhouette that has long been a part of the Rethymno skyline. The 17th-century building boasts a fantastic view of the entire city from the turret. Be sure to visit the minaret at the top of the mosque.

Rimondi Fountain:

Believed to have been built in 1588, the current Rimondi fountain is actually a replacement of the original. This fountain, among many others, has provided potable drinking water to residents during water shortages since the 17th century. The fountain's decorative pieces also double as practical parts of the fountain.

Weather in Rethymno

Greece's climate is Mediterranean in nature, and provides ideal holiday weather year-round, with summer temperatures reaching the mid-30s and winters in the 10-15°C range. This makes for ideally hot summer days and an extremely mild winter. Plan for copious sunshine in the summer and rainy weather in the winter. Though Rethymno lies on the Aegean Sea, the heat is dry rather than humid.

Travel to Rethymno

Travel to Rethymno is simple and straightforward. Simply fly into either Heraklion International Airport (HER) or Chania International Airport (CHQ), both located on the island of Crete. Aegean ferries run on a regular schedule, and more often during the highest tourist season. Both car-carrying ferries and catamarans run between the Cyclades Islands, Crete, and mainland Greece daily.

Stop looking for a holiday villa. You have the best property on the site. Got back today from a great week in Crete. Villa is immaculate, great position in the hills with views off the sea and mountains. Great position with loads to do all within a 20 mins drive. The villa has everything you need it's beyond fantastic we have a great time and it's so peaceful. Three great tavernas in a two mins walk and loads of great places to eat within a few minutes drive. Would recommend to anyone. Villa done to highest standards. Thanks Chris

Fabulous villa, fabulous location

5 of 5
The villa is fabulous, still new and shiny and the build, fittings (windows - all with fly screens- doors, kitchen, etc) all to a very high standard. The gardens are excellent, immaculate and very well maintained. Just outside the garden, lots of trees with birds and wildlife and the flowers in the garden attracted butterflies. The entrance drive looks great, but is a little tight the first time you go in, in a large 4-wheeler, but we got used to it! The view from the garden and terrace are amazing day and night. The pool is not huge but big enough for two. It doesn't have a deep end so not good for diving. Pool cleaned every morning. Garden also has loungers and parasols. Villa Anemone also has a barbecue. Villa cleaned and linen changed midweek. TV in lounge with Satellite and a TV in the bedroom; Greek channels but we found UK and US programmes with the original sound and Greek sub-titles, but you don't go to Crete to watch TV. Wifi was good - we had two iPads and two phones connected. Excellent air-conditioning. There is a safe. The hosts were very nice and friendly and greeted us when we arrived, and left us a welcome pack of cheese, olives, bread, wine, tea, coffee, etc; brought us some home grown vegetables during the week; and came to say goodbye when we left. Bali is a good half hour walk down, probably more coming back up-hill especially in the heat (or heels!) but the local taxi company (the owners gave us the card - Vasilis Maris ++30 6986 272886) was very helpful pleasant and cheap. Bali is a quirky resort, very long, twisty, up and down, and narrow, but a good choice of restaurants and bars for all tastes and prices. Especially try the old town/harbour and Evita Bay. Beaches vary in quality and crowded-ness, so it depends what you like; some water sports and kiddies water inflatables, etc. But with such a lovely villa, gardens, terrace and pool you are happy at home to be honest. We had a car and explored beaches along the coast between Bali and Rethymno; and the south coast, Plakias, Shinaria, Amoudi, Damnoni, etc. We found a lovely taverna on the road towards Rethymno, less than five minutes drive, on top of a hill and curve in the road; fabulous views towards Bali, decent food. The villa owners son Manos, works in a bar/restaurant called Porto Paradiso where we ended up most nights for a night-cap. And his brother was also there during his break from national service. Would we recommend it? We most certainly would.
