Paxi-Paxos, Greece, awaits.

The islands of Paxi-Paxos are an island chain in the Ionian Sea, comprised of Paxos, Antipaxos, Nisaki, and Katsonisi. They are home to some of the most valuable holiday real estate in Greece, due to both British and Italian investors retiring to the islands. The islands enjoy a rich history of olive oil pressing and soap making. Though these industries have mostly been replaced by tourism, the olive groves remain, stretching over much of the islands. Paxi-Paxos is part of the Cultural Village of Europe, a trans-national organization that promotes cultural endeavours within the European Union. The Cultural Village of Europe hosts an annual music festival on Paxi-Paxos.

For larger groups, HomeAway offers a wide variety of villas in Paxi-Paxos. These villas are equipped with various different amenities including full kitchens and balconies with a view of the sea. For couples and smaller groups, the best option is a Paxi-Paxos apartment. HomeAway offers a wide range of apartments, from small cosy spaces to spacious multi-room flats for several people.

Those seeking to explore other nearby islands should browse HomeAway's selection of holiday homes on Corfu as well as the selection of holiday homes on Kefallonia.

Things to do

Gaios:

Gaios, the port city on the island of Paxi, is considered the capital city of the Paxi island group. This port city is actually a natural fjord, as another islet, Pontikonisi, sits directly in the bay. Gaios is situated on the east coast of Paxi and just south of the main ferry terminal for the Paxi islands.

Water Planet Dive Center Gaios:

The Water Planet Dive Center offers diving courses for both beginners and advanced divers. Experience the underwater treasures that lie at the bottom of the seabed near Paxos. Interact with sea life and the various ruins found along the shoreline, in a safe and well-directed environment.

Tripito Arch:

The Tripito Arch is a collapsed sea cave that now forms a land bridge to the peninsula of Tripito. This natural formation seems like an optical illusion at first glance. The arch can only be reached on foot, and is best navigated with a hiking map of the island. Visitors can walk across the arch.

Paxos Oasis Sub:

The Paxos Oasis Sub is definitely a once in a lifetime experience. This Boston Weller submarine travels along the edges of Paxos, showing visitors rock formations, reefs, caves, and shipwrecks. Schedules change according to the season and the particular current at any given time. Groups of 13 maximum are allowed into the vessel.

Voutoumi Beach:

Visit Voutoumi Beach, on the nearby island of Antipaxos. This secluded beach is connected to Vrika Beach (mentioned below). Voutoumi is more secluded and therefore less crowded. About 200 steps up the hill sits the Bella Vista taverna. As the name suggests, this small restaurant does indeed have a stunning view.

Vrika Beach:

Only accessible by water taxi, Vrika beach is a popular tourist destination, with perfect sand and fantastic views. Two lunch restaurants welcome locals and tourists alike. The hike between Vrika and Voutoumi beach offers some of the most beautiful views on the island of Paxos.

Weather in Paxi-Paxos

Summers are hot but dry on Paxos, and winters only slightly cooler (10-12°C). The Etesian winds blow most afternoons between May and October, though this mostly affects the western side of Paxos and other islands. These winds are problematic for sailors in the Aegean Sea, but ideal for those in search of perfect windsurfing conditions.

Travel to Paxi-Paxos

Travelling to Paxi-Paxos is simple! Flights arrive into Naxos Island National Airport (JNX) daily from both Athens (ATH) and various other European cities. Then take the ferry across the strait between Naxos and Paxos. Both car-carrying ferries and catamarans run daily throughout the Ionian Sea and more often during tourist season.

                                                          Letos Villa - Absolutely PERFECT!

                                                          5 of 5
On line the photos looked perfect and the price was affordable to us. The lovely owner, Dimitris, kindly picked us up from the port of Gaios in Paxos and took us 5 mins up the hill to the villa. We were taken straight into to a big comfortable sitting/dining room, in front of us a glass paneled wall with sliding doors leading out onto a huge veranda. Beyond - a simply spectacular view of the old port of Gaios and the sparkling blue sea. We were in heaven and we had only put a foot inside the door! The photos on line don't do enough justice to this spacious, clean, comfortable and very well equipped villa. The veranda has good wooden sunbathing recliners and nice solid chairs and 2 tables to choose which to breakfast at! Downstairs I had one of the double bedrooms with French windows that led out onto another huge paved area with tropical plants. We were not overlooked by the row of 5 apartments on our left and it was a very quite spot full of bird song in the mornings. Dimitris is a most accommodating owner and could not do enough to make sure we had everything we needed before he headed back to his home in Athens. He is converting another fabulous house behind our villa with 5 bedrooms and an even higher veranda that will have the same view over our rooftop, giving both villas privacy from each other. This would be an amazing place to come with extended family and fill up both houses. We had a bedroom each in Letos Villa and that was perfect but this house could very comfortable take more than twice the amount - making it a bargain for a big family! It is a 5 minute walk down the hill the the beautiful town of Gaios with many more interesting shops than I have ever seen on mainland Corfu. There is CAPRICCIO an amazing Gelateria on the harbour front (Hazelnut, Fig & Ricotta, Lemon and Basil, Dark Chocolate, Pistachio, Coconut etc) all freshly made with natural ingredients several times a week. We hired a car (Ionian Car Hire the cheapest at 28 euros a day) and explored the island daily. So many INCREDIBLE little beaches and olive groves. Look out for Fotis on Monodendri Beach. 15 Euros for a top quality massage (he used to work for the Athens football team) under the olive trees metres from the sea! Paxos is now our favourite Greek island. It has not been destroyed by tourism. Letos Villa is the best villa we have stayed in in our 30 years of coming to Greece. I cannot recommend it highly enough! Thank you Dimitris for having us! We'll be back!

                                                          A really magical place

                                                          5 of 5
Our stay at Villa Adriana was even better than we had hoped. It's a beautifully renovated old house with a fresh, contemporary interior that has none of the slightly 'frilly' furnishings found in many of the other rental villas on the island. Dora, the lovely house manager, was waiting for us when we arrived and a welcome basket had been left for us on the kitchen table. It was a real treat to have such a great selection of books in the bookcase, two super-sized hammocks, a well-equipped kitchen, a really roomy shower, fluffy towels and a twice-weekly cleaning service (this included the removal of rubbish bags so we didn't have to usual holiday chore of having to schlep around the area trying to find the local bins). Dora speaks excellent English and looked after us wonderfully - even going out of her way to make sure we got off the island to catch our flight home during a national strike. And the garden.....a real movie-star's retreat because it's so secluded. We were ucky to see the garden in its late-Spring mode with the lavender beds, wild garlic, mountain sage, broom and roses providing spectacular vistas, flashes of colour and honeyed-breezes. There is also a spectacular view of the turquoise sea in Lakka bay from the upper terrace. The best thing of all is that we had three weeks without getting into a car. The villa is a short walk away from lovely Lakka village and two of the most secluded and breathtaking beaches on the island. The village itself is well equipped with some good, affordable restaurants, several grocery shops/bakeries etc and a warm and welcoming community. Bliss!

                                                          Best holiday I've ever had

This was the best holiday I've ever had. Lakka is a gorgeous place, with lovely scenery, people and food. Me and my girlfriend went here for our first holiday because we didn't want to go out clubbing etc so this was ideal. The villa was amazing and had a great view of the island probably the best on the island in my view. I even proposed to my girlfriend on the balcony of the villa we stayed at on the night time when its nice and quiet and the lights are on in the town reflecting off the water and we had candles on it was great. We met a great family who own a little pub there and the girl who works there and who was kind of a travel rep for us was really nice and helped us with anything we needed and her and her family made us feel really welcome. Me & my girlfriend will definitely return here in the future and would recommend this place to any couples looking for some nice quality, romantic time together.
