Naxos is perfect for a traveller's next adventure.

Located in the Cyclades islands, Naxos is home to more than 6,000 residents. This island is incredibly important historically (several ruins are available for viewing, particularly those on the nearby islet of Portara), and also the most fertile of the Greek islands, resulting in increased agriculture and local food; fruit and vegetable crops, as well as cattle breeding, make Naxos the most self sufficient island in the entire Cyclades island chain. HomeAway offers a wide variety of villas on Naxos to serve as a home base during any stay on the island.

Aside from Naxos accommodations, HomeAway offers relaxing apartments of Naxos. These properties sleep 10+ people, making them ideal choices for groups with large numbers of friends and family. What's more, these accommodations come with all the amenities needed to turn a holiday rental into a real home while on holiday. For those searching for more active pursuits, villas on Mykonos are nearby and on an island sure to thrill. The island of Santorini, also close to Naxos, is the perfect getaway spot for those seeking secluded holiday villas.

Things to do

Captain Panos Sailing Day Tours:

Captain Panos Sailing Day Tours is one of the most popular activities on the island of Naxos. Visitors will enjoy the waters around Naxos, watch dolphins in the bay, and visit various caves along the shoreline. Refreshments are provided, as well as a photo CD at the end of the day.

Portara:

The archaeological site of Portara is located on an island now only connected to Naxos by a causeway. This unfinished temple faces Delos, said to be Apollo's birthplace. Built around 530 BC, this temple was never completed due to political unrest. In the 5th and 6th centuries AD, it was converted into a church (as were many Greek temples).

Plaka Beach:

Located on the Western side of the island, Plaka Beach faces the island of Paros. Plaka is comprised of fine white sand and white marble. Sunsets at the beach are particularly popular, given its location. Restaurants and beach facilities are nearby. A portion of the beach is meant for nude sunbathing.

Chora, Naxos City:

The city of Naxos, also called 'Chora' (as are all towns on the Greek islands with the same name as the island on which they stand), is located on the west side of the island. This town is the oldest centre of archaic Cycladic culture in all of Greece.

Kastro:

This former seat of power houses a 13th-century castle and a 16th-century Cathedral. Along with a number of Venetian residences from this time, the building also houses two very important Greek museums, the Archaeological Museum and the Venetian Museum.

Eggares Olive Press Museum:

Visit the Eggares Olive Press Museum. The press itself dates back to 1884, and the large olive press serves as an example for the 90 olive presses across Greece. The press is unfortunately no longer in use.

Weather on Naxos

The weather on Naxos embodies a Mediterranean climate. Summer temperatures peak in July and August and reach to around 35°C, and dip to around 10°C in colder months. Rains occur only in January and February. A group of annual winds called the Etesians (or Meltemi in Turkish) blow from mid-May to mid-September. These winds are most active in the late afternoon and die down in the evening.

Travel to Naxos

Arriving on Naxos is simplest by plane. Naxos Island National Airport (JNX) has departing and arriving flights from Athens Airport (ATH) and other European cities daily. Taxis and boats are available for hire on the island itself. Car-carrying ferries and passenger ferries travel to all the major islands in the Aegean. Ferries arrive into the town of Naxos (of the same name). The major road leading into the central island is called the Leof Naxou Glinadou Apollona.

We had a great stay- the villa is very well equipped and comfortable. Riet is very helpful and knowledgeable about the island so gave us lots of tips for good restaurants and places to see.

Lovely wee house, excellent location

5 of 5
We stayed in the house for 6 nights in July. The location is excellent, less than 10 mins from the port and a few mins into the old town itself. The house is nicely furnished and ample storage space for our clothes. Janine (housekeeper/ property manager) was very helpful during our stay and supplied us with drinks and fruit on our arrival. There is a covered seating/ eating area outside which is very nice, although we only had breakfast mainly due to the heat. There was no noise at all during the night and we all slept very well! There are so many restaurants and bars in the old town, we loved Manolis Garden Taverna in the old town, the food is traditional, very reasonably priced and good service. The town beach is about 20 minute walk through the old town, it is actually a nice shallow beach with plenty of sunbeds. It does get quite crowded. We took the bus to Plaka beach a couple of times, it goes frequently from the port and is only a couple of euro. Plaka is the last stop and is a lovely tranquil beach, cheaper sunbeds than the town beach. There is a supermarket next to the bus stop, handy for drinks; the Plaka Beach Hotel is next door, the pool is lovely. You can use it (as we did) if you have drinks or food. Chris was an excellent host, he kept in touch prior to our stay and during to see if there were any problems. He ensured Janine met us at the port and took us to the house. Overall we would stay at House Fontana again, it is lovely with an excellent location. Highly recommended. :)
