Ligourio is a small village in the foothills of Mt. Arahneo, in the Argolis prefecture of Greece. The main reason that visitors head to this quiet part of the country is to visit the famous amphitheatre at Epidavros, which is just 3km from the centre of Ligourio and has been hosting events since 3BC. Taking in an evening performance is a must, and if you stay in Ligourio accommodation you have just a short journey to make in order to get home at the end of an enjoyable and unique night.

Things to do in Ligourio, Greece

Ligourio has been inhabited for many hundreds of years, and the remains of the town walls of the ancient settlement of Lyssa can be seen nearby. The area is great for an easy walk or an energetic hike, and you will find that the surrounding landscape is dotted with olive groves, walnut trees and fruit trees – a far cry from more built-up cities and tourist areas elsewhere in the country. The other common site in this religious part of the world is churches. There are literally hundreds of tiny churches and other religious buildings dotted around the countryside, making for some fantastic photo opportunities.

The biggest attraction in the local area is the amphitheatre at Epidavros, a ten minute drive away. The theatre has seating for 14,000, and regularly hosts drama and comedy events, especially during summer evenings, when crowds come from many miles away to enjoy a performance under the stars. The theatre is renowned for its outstanding acoustics, and even if you are seated in the furthest corner of the venue you are sure to be able to hear with absolute clarity.

Within the centre of Ligourio village are a decent array of amenities, including small shops, a bank, a post office and a few cafe-bars. More of the same can be found a short distance away in the port of Epidavros, and a wider selection still can be enjoyed in Nafplion.

            Wonderful place to recharge

            5 of 5
We have stayed at Tony and Angela's lovely villa many times over the last 24 years. Initially we went when our our sons were little and they learned to swim in the pool and now if they come with us there is plenty of room for all of us including their girlfriends. They like doing the BBQ now. There is lots to do and fascinating sites to visit, restaurants etc but nothing is better than a swim under the stars! I love having the place to ourselves, no competition for the sun loungers here. Its great too to be able to pick up extra guests at Corinth as the connection from Athens airport is quick and easy. Tony always has a new restaurant for us to try. Its a wonderful place to stay.
