Kea is perfect for your next island getaway.

The Greek Islands are the perfect destination for any travellers' next holiday. The island of Kea is located across the Steno Keas straight from mainland Greece. This island has just over 2,000 permanent residents, though the tourist population increases this number in summer months. The island is well known for its ideal scuba-diving conditions, with several fascinating wrecks lying just off the coast.

Visitors will certainly enjoy a Greek getaway on the island of Kea—and a holiday rental is the best place to start. A range of different accommodations in Kea is available for a variety of travelling parties. Single-family residences are available through HomeAway, with a variety of amenities and for a variety of rental periods, ensuring guests get just what they need during a stay on the island. HomeAway also has grand villas in Kea available for larger groups. These breathtaking villas boast amenities such as swimming pools, fully equipped kitchens, and the ability to sleep 10+ guests at any given time. For those looking for more bustling cities, the nearby island of Mykonos is also an option. For a more secluded location, the island of Santorini offers many beautiful holiday rentals.

Things to do

Temple of Athena on Kea:

The Temple of Athena dates back to the late 6th century BC. The Archaeological Museum of Kea houses sections of the Temple of Athena, as well as other parts of the ancient city. The museum is open from 8am-3pm daily. Full-price tickets are three euro, while reduced-rate tickets are two euro.

Otzias Beach:

Visit Otzias Beach, located on the northernmost part of Kea. This beach is easy to access by car, at just a 15-minute drive away from the harbour. Stands to buy food and drinks are available, as is a small children's playground.

Panagia Kastriani Monastery:

Located on the northern side of Kea, the Panagia Kastriani Monastery was built around 1700 AD. Tradition states that shepherds saw a light at the top of Kastri, then ascended to the top. Upon digging they found an icon of the Virgin Mary, and decided to build a monastery on that very spot.

Keadivers Dive Center:

Keadivers Dive Center is located in the harbour town of Vourkari, on the northwestern corner of Kea. Keadivers leads dives for both beginning and advanced divers to the island's underwater treasures. Among these are the Patris sunken ship of 1868, the HMHS Britannic (sister ship of the Titanic).

Lion of Kea:

Visit the mysterious stone Lion of Kea. This archaic object is one of the most popular tourist sites on the island. The legend follows that the Lion was sent to the island to ravage the beautiful water nymphs that once lived on Kea.

Athens:

Explore Athens during a Greek holiday. The bustling metropolis of three million will surely be a change of pace. Explore the Neoclassical and Greco-Roman architecture. Be sure to visit the Parthenon and the recently opened and incredibly popular New Acropolis Museum.

Weather on Kea

Kea's weather is consistent with the Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, but not humid, and temperatures reach the mid-30s. Winters are rainy but not too cold, and only dip down to the mid-10s. A group of winds, called the Ethesians (or Meltemi in Turkish) blow all summer long. In the late afternoon and early evening, these winds can disrupt the western edge of Kea, as well as sailors at sea. Signs are posted along Kea's western beaches.

Travel to Kea

Kea is most easily reached by way of the Greek ferry system. Travellers should fly into Athens Airport (ATH) and transfer to the Ferry system at the main ferry harbour. Both car-carrying and passenger ferries arrive in Korissia on the island of Kea regularly. These ferries are more frequent during the high tourist season. From Korissia, the Epar. Od. Limaniou Korissias-Ormou Kampiou Road leads eastward across the island through Milopotamos, Ioulis, Kastanies, and Astras.

Unspoilt paradise with amazing views

5 of 5
Kea is a quiet, relatively undeveloped and unspoilt island. As soon as you arrive you can't help but relax as people are friendly and the living is easy. Villa Sandra Maria is the icing on the cake. It is the last of a group of three villas built down the cliff side so has uninterrupted views, privacy and quiet. The infinity pool was so inviting and warm and the views were amazing. I somehow awoke every morning and watched the sunrise, and we dined outdoors every evening and watched the sun set. Heaven! There are so many different areas to sit, two large, shaded outdoor dining areas, one sheltered from the occasional wind, which was actually quite a pleasant feature in the heat. Because the villa faces north you can find shady areas to sit while still looking out on the view, including a secluded, mature garden area. We stayed in the main house which has an open plan master bedroom suite upstairs with three balconies. There was also a smaller double bedroom downstairs with separate shower room. They both featured plenty of storage and the two showers were powerful and the water hot - there was even a cold outdoor shower which was really handy for the pool. The comfort and decor of the villa makes you feel at home straight away as it has many of Olga's paintings and lovely touches to make it feel like a home. Every detail has been thought of, the villa has surplus amounts of towels, linens and crockery, so we did not want for anything while staying here. Correspondence with Olga, the owner manager was excellent. She responded quickly to any queries, booked the ferry crossing for us and when we experienced problems with the wifi she sent somebody to fix it immediately. We visited two of the local beaches, where you can park on the side of the road, under the trees and wander down to the sheltered, sandy coves which are well organised with loungers to rent. There are many options for eating out nearby, including a yacht marina with several restaurants, or for cheaper restaurants visit the lovely hill town of Ioulida. We shopped for all our food at the supermarket, bakery, butcher and fishmonger in the port and also bought fresh fish from a man on a boat and loved being able to buy delicious local produce grown on the island. We really did not want to leave and will definitely return now that we have found this beautiful island and gorgeous villa.
