Make a holiday villa in Karavados your home away from home

The Ionian island of Kefalonia offers the nature lover more than they can sink their teeth into. It boasts picturesque beaches fringed by towering cliffs and boasting a host of geological curiosities as well as forested landscapes dotted with mountains. The place is also rich in history having been home to the legendary King Odysseus. Kavarados, a tranquil corner of this magnificent island that sits close to the coastline is favoured by holidaymakers as a base from which to explore Cefalonia, as the Italians call it, and other Ionian islands. And rightly so as they will find a lovely mix of holiday rentals in Karavados to suit their needs. Those travelling as a family will want to book the spacious villas there not least because of the stunning seaside views they command. Most of these Karavados holiday villas have swimming pools among a host of other great facilities.

Things to do

-Beaches: Bordered by amazingly clear turquoise waters and carpeted in soft, golden sands, the Kefalonia coastline is simply incomparable. Pretty enough to have been used as the set for a number of film productions is the Antisamos Beach. This is a stretch of white, pebbly shoreline with such clear waters you can see little fish swimming underneath. It provides everything a sun-starved holidaymaker needs from free parasols and loungers to a selection of bars and eateries.

-Food and drink: Karavados holiday home residents on promenades along Kefalonia’s pristine coastline will find incredible restaurants and bars on the way. They can seek refreshment at the Akri Seaside Bar if they want a place to shelter from the summer sun while sipping chilled cocktails and gazing idly into the endless waters of the Ionian Sea. For an unforgettable taste of lamb prepared in traditional Greek method and served in friendly surroundings one can pop into To Perasma.

-Boat trips: Sailing around the Ionian islands surveying the incredible geological features that punctuate its coastline is one of the delights those booked into Karavados holiday villas can look forward to. There are a number of boat rentals available along the Kefalonia coastline from which tourists can hire vessels to go exploring the secluded beaches, hidden caves and imposing cliffs. The stunning Drogarati Caves and the Koutavos Lagoon are among the attractions they’ll encounter.

-Hiking: Those who would like to hike through the rugged mountainous landscape of Kefalonia will probably want to schedule their visit for autumn or late spring as the heat during summer can be quite oppressive. Along the way hikers will be exposed to the island’s amazing range of flora and fauna, which includes over 200 bird species. When they climb up Mount Ainos they’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramas stretching all the way to the endless blue of the Ionian.

-Historical monuments: History buffs will also find something worth photographing or putting down in their journals in Kefalonia. The Evangelistria Church is one of them and the ancient structures in Argostoli, which include a lighthouse and a Venetian castle, are others. They can top off on visits to these sites with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli. Exhibits here include artefacts collected from the prehistoric and Roman eras.

Weather in Kavarados

Most of the tourists looking to spend time in Kavarados holiday homes go there during the usual holiday months between June and August. At this time of year sunshine is plentiful and rainfall is scarce. Temperatures average between 26 and 28°C which is not to say that there are no days when temperatures soar beyond the 30°C mark. Savvy travellers will land in Kafelonia in September as temperatures are slightly cooler then, though still averaging in the twenties. There are also less tourists hanging about. In winter temperatures average between 15 and 17°C.

Travel to Kavarados

The Argostolion Airport is the closest to this resort and it receives regular flights from Birmingham and Manchester among other cities. These four-hour flights from the UK are usually scheduled for morning hours between 7 and 8 am. The airport is just about 8 miles from Kefalonia and visitors can use taxis or by the shuttle bus to travel to their holiday apartments in.

We spent 10 days at Villa Petra in July 2016 and I have to say that we had the most fabulous relaxing holiday we have had in years. Communications with the owners prior to our vist were first class and directions to the villa were easy to follow. We used the hire car company recommended by the owners and again received a first class service. On arrival at the villa we were blown away by the mesmerising view of the mountains behind. The villa itself had everything that you could possibly wish for and was meticulously clean. The kitchen area is large and well stocked with everything that you would wish to use while on holiday. The lounge area is very comfortable and leads out on to a gorgeous patio area with dining table and chairs. A great area if you need to get out of the sun for a while and even better when it's dark and you get to see the amazing stars light up the sky. If you're a keen photographer pack your tripod you won't be disappointed. The pool is just perfect for cooling down and in the afternoon you get a lovely cooling light breeze which makes laying out in the heat that much more bearable. We didn't see a cloud from the moment we left Gatwick until we returned to the UK.The air conditioning in the bedrooms were a godsend and we found the bed really comfy. The Villa is perfectly situated for getting around the rest of the island. The longest journey was to Fiskardo which takes about an hour and a half. We stopped at Myrtos Beach (breathtaking) and Assos (enchanting) en route to break up the journey. All three are well worth a visit. We hired a boat in Fiskardo and went off in search of hidden coves. We had such a fun time and saw some fabulous beaches that are probably not accessible by road. We also loved Messina Lakes and Agia Efermia and Porus is a great place to stop and have lunch. The views on offer everywhere you go will blow your breath away. The villa and pool were cleaned twice during our stay and all was done to the highest standard. Wifi signal was great throughout our stay and puts the uk to shame. I really cannot recommend this Villa highly enough. We have had a wonderful relaxing holiday, in fact everything a holiday should be. Finally a word of warning, if you want to party the night away to loud music and bright lights then this is definitely not the place for you. If however you want peace, privacy, relaxation and your home from home comforts then Villa Petra ticks every single box. We loved it.

                                                      A wonderful villa and location.

We arrived at midnight and George, Dennis & Maria were there to greet us with a bottle of wine from their vineyard, which was lovely. The villa is really nice and has everything you need. (aircon, wifi, ensuite etc). The BBQ area is fantastic with great a sea view across to Zante. Dennis (George's father) has a farm around the villa and he brought us fresh eggs, lemons, oranges, figs, vegetables every day which was wonderful. The villa is very quiet and peaceful, which was just what we wanted. The village square is a five minute walk and has a couple of tavernas and a great little restaurant where the food is excellent and not expensive. The beach is a 25 minute walk or 5 minutes by car and has a restaurant. A car is a must if you want to explore the island but it is well worth the expense as the whole island is stunning. We had a wonderful stay at Villa Spartia and will definitely be returning as soon as we can.
