Holidaymakers searching for holiday rentals in Kalymnosalso enquired about Kefalonia holiday villas, Sicily holiday apartments and Santorini holiday villas

Beautiful Kalymnos awaits.

Explore the stunning island of Kalymnos on a holiday in Greece. Discover the crossroads of culture on this Greek island, which is actually closer to mainland Turkey than to mainland Greece. The natural landscape has long been shaped by volcanoes, earthquakes, and the natural erosion by the sea. Kalymnos' neighbouring island Telendos used to be part of Kalymnos, and is now separated by a channel of water almost a half mile wide. The island's natural geological formations are definitely an impressive sight. The caves at Skalia and Kefala are each well known by locals on Kalymnos.

When planning your Greek island getaway, finding the right accommodation is essential. HomeAway has lots of options for many different types of groups. For couples and single families visiting the area, Kalymnos apartments from HomeAway are a great choice. In the event that a party needs or simply wants more space, HomeAway also offers several holiday villas on Kalymnos. These rentals are available with varying amenities to best suit travellers' needs.

Many travellers also like to explore other Greek islands during their holidays. Such travellers can also find excellent accommodations in the Dodecanese region, for example on Rhodes.

Things to do

Pothia:

Visit the capital town of Pothia on your trip to Kalymnos. This small city is home to the Archipelago of Kalymnos, as well as several cultural and historical sites. The Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos and the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Jesus are of particular interest. The cathedral features sculptures by renowned Greek sculptor Giannoulis Chalepas.

Caves:

Visit the various caves on Kalymnos, part of the island's rich geological formations. The cave at Skalia contains breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, and is accessible from the town of Skalia. Kefala is on located the southwest corner of the island. It is 260 feet long with six rooms and a stalagmite said to look like Jupiter on a throne.

Sponge-diving industry:

Kalymnos is famous for its sponge-diving industry. Natural sponges can be found all around the island, and especially in the Pserimos. Sponge diving is generally still done free-hand with a harpoon and harvested individually. Make sure to purchase a local natural sponge while on the island of Kalymnos, and visit the Sponge Diving Museum in Pothia.

Rock-climbing:

Kalymnos has become famous for its wonderful rock climbing and bouldering, which has been available year round since the 1990s. The west coast is most popular, due to its limestone rock escarpment. Regular climbing festivals draw climbers from around the world.

Apollo Temple:

Visit the Apollo Temple on Kalymnos. Archaeological findings go back to the 1st millennium BC and include statuary, pottery, and inscriptions at the Sanctuary of Delian Apollo. Located outside the city of Horia, the Apollo Temple is currently the site of two Christian churches built in 5th and 6th centuries.

Castles:

Visit the 11th century Castle of Hora. The castle feature remnants of early life in the form of ruins of buildings and churches and an olive press. The Castle of Chrysocheria was built by the Knights Hospitaller, and contains remnants of life dating back to Neolithic period.

Weather in Kalymnos

Kalymnos' weather is picturesque all year round. Summers reach up to 30°C, but the heat is particularly dry and therefore quite lovely. Mild winters get no colder than 10°C, with some precipitation in January and February. The Etesian winds create ideal conditions for athletes in search of prime windsurfing conditions.

Travel to Kalymnos

Reaching Kalymnos is now easier than ever. Both a ferry system and an airport provide transportation to mainland Greece and Turkey. Kalymnos Island National Airport (JKL) has boosted the economy of Kalymnos and simplified the travel process for visitors and residents alike. Flights connect most often from Athens International Airport (ATH) but are also available from several Turkish cities.

Excellent views at sunset

5 of 5
We recently stayed at this villa as we were attending a wedding and opted for this rather than an all inclusive resort as some of the other wedding party did. I am so glad we did. The 2 bedrooms were spacious, both with AC, the lounge/dining area had ample room, with a TV, we never sat in, so we never used any of these. The kitchen was well equipped, with all the things you would expect at home. We mainly used the kitchen for breakfast and lunch on the patio,as we ate out most nights. The view from the patio, and from the pool had the most fantastic views across the islands and the sea. We seldom went out to eat before watching the fabulous sunset into the sea. We did go to Zia to watch the sunset and had to struggle with hundreds of others looking for car parking and vantage points. We much preferred the calm and quiet by the pool at sunset. The pool and sun beds were superb, this where we spent most of our days, just relaxing and having a swim whenever we wanted. Each morning, I always reminded myself why I chose the villa, and the holidays with 2 young children trying to get sun beds near the baby pool, and the disappointment if we missed out. I will be definitely using the villa again, and using the guys at Matishari Holidays who sorted our car hire (you need a car) who where fantastic also. Overall excellent holiday and look forward to returning.

Wow! What a property, views are incredible and has everything you need

5 of 5
Myself and partner have just spent 2 weeks at this fabulous property and have had such a thoroughly brilliant time. The house is situated at the top of Mirties and the views are spectacular, wether it be from either bedroom, the main room or the superb balcony/veranda and yes it is a fair walk back up each day/night if you don’t have a car - though going down at night is fine if you are reasonably fit and you can get taxis back from Mirties/Massouri at night if you want. The neighbourhood is really peaceful and you have no choice but to relax and enjoy the views and time there. It was really clean throughout and the attention to detail that Paul and the ladies have given to all of the equipment through the property is excellent. It has everything you need in the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms, with ample space for a family (there were only 2 of us.) Breakfast on the veranda with the view over to Telendos is absolutely spectacular and with lots of utensils, you can cook whatever you want to - or not! Plenty of cups, plates, glasses etc and full of cleaning equipment and utensils also. The air con is excellent, quiet, v efficient and very welcome in the July/August Kalymnian heat, as was the clean pool, which was such a key aspect for me and my partner - that cool mid afternoon dip was superb, again with views overlooking the village - just wow! Thank you for the welcome water in fridge and of course the chilled ‘fizz!’ What a way to be welcomed and start the holiday. The 2 ladies who met us on our arrival were really informative, pleasant and very accommodating Thank youPaul and team for helping it to be such an unforgettable holiday. Geoff & Leanne
