Heraklion Holiday Villas & Apartments (300+)

Good location, can you fit in with the locals?

4 of 5
This well-located property is in a street just inside the Venetian city walls. Everywhere within Heraklion city centre is within an easy and enjoyable walk. This is where you should be if you want to experience living in a city several thousand years old. Be aware that many of the streets are not suitable for modern vehicles and large parts of the city centre are (thankfully) pedestrianised. The alleys off this "street" can only be accessed on foot which makes this a cut-through (just) for cars and (more sensibly) for motorbikes. Within the flat none of this will bother you but if you have a hire car you will be disadvantaged. There is no public parking except the streets and brown field sites where you will pay. There is one at the beginning of the street. Pay your fees each day (£5), explain when you want your car and they will advise on where to park. After we damaged our hire car (a 4WD truck, yes really!) trying to get up the street to the flat, we parked it and wheeled our baggage up the street. Don't take heavy bags, you will need to lift them up a staircase to the first floor flat. This is not an affluent area, many of the properties are derelict and grafitti is everywhere. We experienced no personal security issues in these alleyways. The two rooms of the flat have stone walls which insulate against noise and heat. Air conditioning in the main room is invaluable. The fourth wall is largely single glazed windows and shutters for privacy and protection against the sun. Noise streams in and out of these (Heraklion centre is under the flight path). This and surrounding properties occupy segments of the open space between them. In the southern mediterranean, people (and their dogs) spend mornings/evenings outside or inside with their doors and windows open. If you are not ready for this, go and lock yourself away in a hotel bedroom somewhere. At night the higher you can get, the more chance of a breeze. Above the kitchen/bathroom there is a table and chairs, great when the sun goes down but if there is a tremor, you'll wonder whether being so high was sensible! Everything works (immersion heater for hot water, wireless internet router, oven etc) so long as someone in the flat below remembers to turn on the pump for your water supply! We enjoyed some great meals from the kitchen (suggestion for improvement: a chopping board). This is a place for travellers interested in experiencing, for a time, life as the locals live it. Enjoy!

Amazing!!!!

5 of 5
Giannis and Katerina are excellent hosts who go out of their way to make your stay easy. Warm and welcoming, they were waiting for us with refreshments and great tips. They were always very quick and courteous to reply, and left us water, juice, coffee, and some small food items. We felt safe having them as hosts, since they are really helpful and always there in case you need anything. The apartment itself is amazing. It was just what we needed, very close to the center (just 15 minutes walk), in a small city-like neighborhood at the outskirts of the town. You can find a bus and taxi stop some meters away. There are many shops, supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacy, a playground all nearby and in walking distance. Once a week there is a flea market in the area, where you can find vegetables, fruits, local products, clothes etc. The house is more than fully equipped, nothing was for want! It is elegant and very nicely decorated. There is enough space for six persons to stay, with three big bedrooms and a very comfortable living room. Thank you very much guys! I wish I could give more than 5 stars.
