Make a holiday rental home or villa in Finikounda, Greece your home away from home

The quaint fishing village of Finikounda (sometimes spelt ‘Finikounta’) sits in the most southerly part of the western Peloponnese, Greece. The destination has great beaches and good amenities, but unlike many other beach resorts in Greece (and Europe in general) does not become overrun by tourists during summer months. This means an enjoyable and authentic Greek holiday can be had, but with tourism on the increase in Finikounda it is suggested that you get in before the crowds arrive!

Things to do in Finikounda, Greece

The main reason that people visit Finikounda is for the magnificent beaches the area has to offer. There are three in total, the longest of which is an impressive 2km long. Although these beaches receive their fair share of tourists, the good news is that it is always possible to find your own secluded spot, even in the height of summer.

Windsurfing in Finikounda is extremely popular, and a number of well-established operators are located along the beaches. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at this energetic sport, Finikounda is the place to do it, but if you are content with just going for a swim you will find that the water is clean, clear and warm (during summer months) – ideal for families with young children.

Finikounda has good amenities, and some of the best tavernas are located near the beach and are a great place to relax and chat with a good mix of tourists and locals. The restaurants around the village continue the theme of being authentic and enjoyable without being too touristy, and are the perfect place to sample dishes of fresh, locally-caught fish such as stuffed sardines, most of which are home-made to old family recipes.

Places to visit on holiday in Finikounda, Greece

Holiday rentals in Finikounda can also be used as bases for exploring the rest of the Messinia prefecture. Pilos, 21km to the north-east, is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors, as there are some excellent walking and hiking opportunities in the surrounding countryside. Tourist facilities have improved here in recent years, but the picturesque town centre remains true to its traditions, and there are also some impressive old landmarks to be visited.

This was my return visit to Greece after 25 years and I couldn't be more delighted with my stay. Agios Andreas is not touristy but has everything I need for a relaxing holiday - authentic tavernas, a quiet beach, and the airport only 45 minutes away. The Beach House was wonderful. Rosemarie had thought of everything - we were particularly grateful for the beach towels and beach bags, plenty of bath/hand towels, olive oil and other condiments, and wine. Having the sea so close to the house was such a treat - I always forget to take something to the beach but it didn't matter - I could just pop back and get it ! We swam at 8 am, before breakfast, when it was beautifully calm and peaceful - this was my favourite time. It's helpful to have swimming shoes as there are stones and gritty sand. A special place !
