The Greek island of Crete is a popular destination for tourists and Douliana is one of many wonderful villages for visitors to stay at. Douliana is located on the northwest part of Crete and offers easy access to many interesting activities and sights. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.

Things to do on holiday to Douliana, Greece

Douliana offers many wonderful views as it is located on top of a hill overlooking Souda Bay. The backdrop of the White Mountains provides a good setting for hikers and cyclists to explore the village and surrounding areas. Approximately five kilometres away are beaches at Kalives and Almerida, which are pleasant spots for sunbathing. Numerous waterports can be tried along the coast here such as swimming, windsurfing, waterskiing and paragliding. Holidaymakers can also taking sailing excursions around the island or enjoy a fishing trip. The island’s only 18-hole golf course is located at Hersonissos. There are a few places to dine in and around Douliana including restaurants and taverns serving mainly Cretan fare. Self catering holidaymakers can purchase food and drink from a mini market in the village square. There are other small shops in the area from which to buy gifts and souvenirs.

There are several interesting places to visit on the island including museums and galleries such as the Nautical Museum at Chania and the Historical Museum and Archive at Heraklion. Numerous historic buildings are located here too including Byzantine churches and chapels, some of which are over a thousand years old. Visitors will also be able to see many monasteries too including the ruined monastery of Katholiko, which is the oldest on the island and possible dates back to the 11th century. Crete has some wonderful natural features such as The Cave of Psychro and The Samaria Gorge. Lake Kournas is a beautiful area surrounded by mountains and is the only lake on Crete.

Weather in Douliana, Greece

The warmest time of the year to visit Douliana is generally July and August when the average high is approximately 29 degrees centigrade. During these months holidaymakers can expect to see an average of 12 to 13 hours of sunshine per day. Whilst January is the month with most prolonged periods of rain at an average of 14 days, May is actually the wettest with an average of 115mm.

Travel to Douliana, Greece

Chania International Airport (CHQ)) is approximately a 45 minute drive from Douliana and has flights to and from Athens (ATH) as well as other European cities such as Berlin-Tegel (TXL) and Moscow-Vnukovo (VKO). There are seasonal flights to and from Amsterdam (AMS), Brussels (BRU), London-Gatwick (LGW) and Stockholm-Arlanda (ARN) amongst other cities too. Europcar, Hertz and Kappa are the three car rental firms are located at the airport. Taxis are available just outside the passenger terminal.

                                                                                                      We loved the accommodation - fantastic main open plan room, lovely kitchen and high spec to all appliances and bathrooms, furniture. Lovely white linen and towels provided. Pool area had fantastic view but pool was very very cold and unfortunately some evenings it was too cold/windy to sit outside, probably due to high location as we found it was considerably warmer down on the coast. That was the only drawback to our stay. Gaby was very helpful although a 'manual' of how to work appliances and local places to have to refer to would be very useful and something we have had in other villas we have stayed in. Couldnt fault the accommodation though and had a lovely time there.

                                                                                                      Overall we enjoyed staying here. There is a full time maintenance person who also greets you upon arrival, looks after the pool, and any mechanical issues with the property, and a chef on site who will cook meals for you in his private kitchen at prices similar to those of the local taverna. The location is remote however and a car is absolutely necessary. Due to the topography of the island a day out to the main towns on the north coast involves a long 1.5 -2 hour tortuous drive on very winding roads through the central mountain range. Beware at all times of Greeks coming the other way going really fast around blind corners on your side of the road! There are one or two TV stations in English and no nightlife. The Wi Fi is weak in the lounge but strong in one bedroom which we dubbed "the office". The beach is somewhat stony but never crowded, sometimes even deserted except for the occupants of the three villas but the water crystal clear. For a get away from the crowds holiday this is it. The kitchen is sparsely equipped, for example only two wine glasses between six people. We broke down and bought a frying pan. The bedrooms are nicely air conditioned but the main lounge/living area is not and gets very hot even in early June. The doors do open wide but that lets in the flies which are terrible until sundown so you have to choose, heat or flies. An A/C in this area would be a HUGE upgrade. A huge plus for the property is the family run Kioni tavern right next door. It is a gem! Breakfast, lunch, dinner or anytime for wine! Really friendly people with reasonable prices and good basic home cooked Greek food, who speak enough English. Their tables are right on the sea/beach front and the views are amazing. Truly excellent. We tried several others but for service alone they were the best. They even contacted a local fisherman for us, who picked us up at our beach and took us out for an hour long trip along the coast at a bargain price. After two weeks of dining with them it felt like leaving friends behind.
