Things to do on holiday to Agios Nikolaos, Greece
There are a number of beaches to choose from in Agios Nikolaos including Ammos, which is a sandy beach by the marina. With many wonderful views to enjoy the area also offers plenty of places to go hiking through the beaches, hills and villages. Visitors can also enjoy boat trips from the harbour such as a trip to the famous Spinalonga.
There is plenty on offer here for sports enthusiasts with two golf courses on Crete, one of which is just 10 kilometres from Agios Nikolaos. Water activities are also very popular here and about 250 metres from the lake on the seafront is the scuba-diving centre. Nearby is also a fitness centre located in Salaminos Street.
There are many places to eat at lunch time and in the evenings with bars, restaurants, cafes and coffee bars, including several along the waterfront. Seafood is very popular here but there is a nice choice of meat and vegetable dishes too. There are lively bars and clubs on 25th Martiou street by the harbour as well as at Akti Iosif Koundourou on the harbour front.

There are several interesting places to visit in Agios Nikolaos including museums and galleries such as the Archaeological Museum, Folklore Museum and Iris Museum. This place also has many churches scattered around the streets including a small church which lends its name to the town. Lake Voulismeni in the centre of town is a popular place for tourists to take photos. Locals refer to this as “the lake” and some even tell tourists that it is bottomless.
The area has many interesting geographical features and visitors may like to visit Dikteon Cave, which has a rich foundation in mythology. The shops here contain original items such as woven fabrics, cups, mugs and china wear and a miscellany of clothes, house decor and local food products and delicacies.

Whilst January is the month with most prolonged periods of rain at an average of 14 days, May is actually the wettest with an average of 115mm.

Heraklion Airport is approximately 64 kilometres from Agios Nikolaos and has flights to and from many European cities through airlines such as Air Berlin, Condor, easyJet, Eurocypria Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, TUIfly and Viking Airlines. Flights to the Greek mainland are handled by Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air and Athens Airways. There is a regular bus service from Heraklion and taxis and cars can be hired from the airport.
