We have just returned from the most fantastic 12 day holiday in Villa Garifallia. The villa was spotlessly clean and comfortable but it was the outside space that sets the villa apart. Gorgeous and fragrant bougainvillea framed the most breathtaking Mediterranean Sea view, ever changing and with the most glorious sunsets. We spent many a happy evening playing cards on the outside terraces both upstairs and downstairs. The pool was a very welcome oasis during the heat of the day and it too, was kept spotlessly clean by the very friendly Costos, who also worked at Katetina taverna 5mins walk from the villa. Very worth a visit to meet some super friendly and welcoming locals namely Valandes and Michael. Trips worth taking are Spinaloga, the monastery at Arkadi, and the pyschros caves although be warned very steep climb up to and down into the caves. We had an automatic car for the entire holiday which we made use of every day, even if only just for a trip to Rethymno to stroll along the beach. Would advise though a four wheel drive or at least a manual, as the roads can be very steep, somewhat challenging and not always paved!!! There is so much to discover on Crete its a magical place full of history and with wonderfully warm people. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend Villa Garifallia and Agni Travel.

  • Amazing villa close to the sea

This villa is beautifully built, all conveniently on one floor (great for my 70yr old mum), with steps to a raised BBQ platform where we would watch the sun set every evening over the sea and into the hills towards Chania. Simply stunning! Argiris was very friendly and the cleaners super efficient, changing towels and bedlinen and leaving the villa feeling refreshed (his Mum was so friendly and although she didn't speak English and my Greek is poor, Google translate was a handy tool and we got to know each other). We walked to Eleven (a local taverna on the beach), although the service was chaotic that evening but the location outstanding. We also walked to a local beach Skaleta, (beyond Creta Star a large hotel) and we ate at Pasithea an enchanting taverna complete with bougainvillea and breath-taking views of the sea - the food was really good and affordable and it's well worth a visit. Although walkable for most, my mum did struggle to walk this far to local beaches and tavernas so we drove the rest of the time, exploring nearby Platanias - great for large super markets, shops, tavernas and beaches - all beaches were clean, had loungers and parasols to rent for about 5euros a pair, showers and even changing tents on some beaches (handy if you're killing time on your last day before a late flight). At the end of the small road is a small supermarket that has a friendly butcher - great for buying meat for the BBQ. The sea was choppy a lot of the time we stayed in August and red flags were everywhere (look out for the flags). We learnt later on that the South coast is always worth a visit if this is the case, as the sea is very calm there (north winds blow over Crete making water choppy in the North and calm but sand swept in the South). So we drove for about 1hr to Plakias which was amazing. The sea was a lot cooler but so calm. The drive was incredible too, through gorges, mountains, olive groves, passing goats, churches through pretty villages... loved it. You have to keep stopping to take photographs. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this villa, although the pool is on the small side and can be warm when you first arrive, it's a welcome refreshment throughout the holiday and there's a really refreshing shower to the side. My only criticism of the villa is the showers are small and there's not much elbow room. Other than that, it's BRILLIANT!
