The mediaeval centre of Stolberg should be your first port of call in this well-named “Historical City of Europe”. Set at the foot of the 13th century castle which is currently being restored, there are many narrow winding streets with their delightful half-timbered cottages dating back to the 15th century. Walk down the Knights Lane (Rittergasse) or visit the splendid St Martin’s Church. The Old Mint Museum is a fascinating museum of coinage in one of the town’s oldest buildings. The nearby Auerberg is worth visiting to see the largest iron double cross in the world. The mining history of this area is retold at the Mining Museum in Strasbourg Mountain. The area was mined from 794AD until the 17th century for copper, tin, iron, silver and gold.
