Things to do in Merzig-Wadern, Germany

Perhaps the main reason holidaymakers head for self-catering accommodation in Merzig-Wadern is to make the most of the beautiful countryside. The area is labelled as a paradise for anyone who enjoys outdoor recreation. For cyclists the towpaths that run alongside the Saar and Mosel rivers provide the ideal setting for a scenic ride. The route will take in sweeping countryside and picturesque old towns and villages. The Mosel valley is known also for its vineyards that originated here during the Roman era and line the hillsides in places such as Saarburg, Serrig and Konz. For walkers there’s an extensive and well marked network of paths to follow in the region surrounding Merzig-Wadern holiday rentals, with numerous interesting sights to discover in the undulating countryside. The area is also home to plenty of history, and the Roman influence can be seen at a handful of locations. The most notable is a short drive away in Trier, which is Germany’s oldest city and protected as a UNESCO World heritage Site. Here you’ll be able to see the spectacular Porta Nigra gate, the Roman baths and the huge amphitheatre, which once had a capacity of more than 20,000. Porta Nigra is especially worth seeing – it’s the largest Roman structure of its kind north of the Alps.

The older parts of the city sit dramtically on a hillside, overlooking the lower, and newer Grund area.

The accommodation was immaculate and Klaus was very welcoming.

5 of 5
On arrival Klaus was most welcoming and showed us around the accommodation. Everything you could need was included. The property was immaculate, well decorated and very clean. The master bedroom is very spacious with plenty of room for luggage and the added space in the utility room is useful too. The village has a supermarket and nice pizza restaurant within walking distance. This was the perfect base for all the places we wanted to visit by car: Luxembourg, Saarschliefe tree-top walk, Saarburg and Trier. My husband, two daughters and I had a lovely holiday. Thank-you!

Beautiful spot

4 of 5
Perfect location for hopping between two Countries, evening walks riverside charm! Would go again. Only one downer for me.; no freezer , not even a tiny box one like in some built in fridges. For the rest pretty perfect spot for day tripping. It's also fairly quiet at times but remember people live around and life moves and grooves. Some traffic ( train plane boats and cars) expected. A very nice owner too.
