Make a holiday rental in Lower Rhine, Germany your home away from home

Lower Rhine holiday accommodation is set in a region of the Federal German state of North Rhine Westphalia. It’s an area of picturesque rural scenery, while also encompassing some of the state’s most important cities, including Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach.

Things to do in Lower Rhine, Germany

Düsseldorf would be a great starting point during your holiday at Lower Rhine self-catering accommodation. One of the most famous parts of this city is the Altstadt, which despite being destroyed in the war, was reconstructed according to the original medieval plans, and today is home to the city’s best shopping and nightlife. There are some 260 bars crammed into little more than one square kilometre.

Duisburg is set on the fringes of the region, and would be well worth visiting from self-catering accommodation in Lower Rhine. Historically this city played a crucial role as an inland harbour, thanks to waterways the snake across the region. You can find out about this network at the German Inland Waterways Museum. There are a host of historic churches in the city, such as St John the Baptist, which dates to the 10th Century, and Duisburg is also noted for its botanical gardens – Kaiserberg and Suisburh-Hamborn.

You could also make the trip from Lower Rhine holiday rentals to the town of Krefeld, which is the site of the impressive Castle Linn. It sits on the banks of the Rhine, enclosed by a moat, and dates to the 1100s. The Linn district of Krefeld is also attractive, with plenty of authentic medieval architecture that has avoided any damage throughout the region’s tumultuous history.

Places to visit on holiday in Lower Rhine, Germany

The city of Cologne is little more than a half-hour drive from many self-catering holiday rentals in Lower Rhine. It’s a city famous for its history and culture, with iconic landmarks such as the cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are plenty of interesting museums in the city – among the most popular are Römisch-Germansiches Museum, which details the Roman history of the region, and Musuem Ludwig, which is devoted to modern art.

This apartment is brilliant - we loved it! We were lucky with the weather so made full use of the wonderful roof terrace. It's even better than it looks in the photo, with beautiful planters and it overlooks the owners' mature and well stocked garden. Everything was spotlessly clean and well thought out - it had everything anyone could want. Very friendly owners who were very helpful and knew the area well so could suggest places to visit. The apartment is in a quiet residential part of Wesel, out in the country side and well placed for loads of cycle rides - all on the flat with lots of cafes to visit along the way. I can highly recommend this property and would not hesitate to return if we were visiting this area again. Thank you both so much for a lovely visit.

An unusual location for a vacation, our Mallorca October being cancelled as the airline went into liquidation. We came to the Rhur area explore its industrial heritage. As we arrived the owner welcomed us and gave us a conducted tour of the extensive apartment. we were impressed by the freshness, standard of decor and amount of equipment. Even fresh flowers that remained fresh all week. Separate kitchen, dining, lounge and bedroom areas allowed us to feel relaxed, no need to shuffle beds around or rebuild a lounge every day. Extensive carpets made walking around very comfortable, and space to leave our shoes on the landing. A very quiet neighbourhood with plenty of on street parking within a few metres. Small supermarket within walking distance and larger stores within a short driving distance. We saw several restaraunts, bars and take-aways nearby, but either ate wider afield or cooked our own meals in the well appointed kitchen. More equipment than we needed. A 4 person kitchen dining table meant we did not need to use the proper "Dining Table". We were out every day, a wet day at Gasometer and shops, dry days in industrial heritage parks or on the Tiger/Turtle rollercoaster at Duisburg. Final cleaning was easy, Our week ended too soon, and we will have to come back next year to see more of the area and enjoy the luxury of this appartment.
