Make a holiday rental in Lower Rhine, Germany your home away from home

Lower Rhine holiday accommodation is set in a region of the Federal German state of North Rhine Westphalia. It’s an area of picturesque rural scenery, while also encompassing some of the state’s most important cities, including Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach.

Things to do in Lower Rhine, Germany

Düsseldorf would be a great starting point during your holiday at Lower Rhine self-catering accommodation. One of the most famous parts of this city is the Altstadt, which despite being destroyed in the war, was reconstructed according to the original medieval plans, and today is home to the city’s best shopping and nightlife. There are some 260 bars crammed into little more than one square kilometre.

Duisburg is set on the fringes of the region, and would be well worth visiting from self-catering accommodation in Lower Rhine. Historically this city played a crucial role as an inland harbour, thanks to waterways the snake across the region. You can find out about this network at the German Inland Waterways Museum. There are a host of historic churches in the city, such as St John the Baptist, which dates to the 10th Century, and Duisburg is also noted for its botanical gardens – Kaiserberg and Suisburh-Hamborn.

You could also make the trip from Lower Rhine holiday rentals to the town of Krefeld, which is the site of the impressive Castle Linn. It sits on the banks of the Rhine, enclosed by a moat, and dates to the 1100s. The Linn district of Krefeld is also attractive, with plenty of authentic medieval architecture that has avoided any damage throughout the region’s tumultuous history.

Places to visit on holiday in Lower Rhine, Germany

The city of Cologne is little more than a half-hour drive from many self-catering holiday rentals in Lower Rhine. It’s a city famous for its history and culture, with iconic landmarks such as the cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are plenty of interesting museums in the city – among the most popular are Römisch-Germansiches Museum, which details the Roman history of the region, and Musuem Ludwig, which is devoted to modern art.

Weather in Lower Rhine, Germany

The climate around Lower Rhine self-catering holiday accommodation is considered one of the warmest in the country. Here temperatures remain warm or pleasant for around five months of the year, from May to September. Winters are a little milder here than in other parts of the country, with highs above five degrees, even in January.

Beautiful house in a lovely location

5 of 5
A beautiful house in a lovely quiet location. Everything we needed for our short stay, we would love to visit again for a longer holiday to explore the area more. The owners were very helpful, showing us around the house on arrival. A very tidy, clean and spacious accommodation and garage. Lovely private garden and our son was invited to use the larger family garden to kick his football around.

Thoroughly enjoyable stay

5 of 5
This house is absolutely charming. All rooms are well-proportioned and light and airy. Everything is equipped to the highest of standards and spotlessly clean. The kitchen was well kitted out with dishwasher, washing machine, kettle, toaster, coffee machine & loads of crockery & cutlery. Outside is a large garden and I loved the fact that there were chairs and tables on every side so you could always sit in the sun. We used the large bedroom which had ample storage and a really comfortable bed. There is also a large second bedroom which was very pleasant and had two folders full of information about the area which were very well organised . The bathroom was very spacious with a great shower and again, immaculately clean. We made use of the bikes and although we were only at Haus Otto for a few days we realised what a lovely, friendly area it is. We walked to St. Hubert to eat in the restaurants in the evenings & especially enjoyed Fellini's & Il Carretto, both Italian. Il Carretto in particular was very friendly and helped us out (via the internet!) with the menu when our knowledge of German failed us. There is a good Edeka supermarket in the same town and other larger ones a little further afield, but not far if using the car. The town had a couple of cafes and there are lots of other lovely places to visit for coffee and cake. Kempen is a good place to visit with a pedestrianised centre and plenty of shops and cafes. Silke was an excellent host - friendly , helpful and she speaks very good English. I can recommend this accommodation to anyone - kids would be very happy there and safe to run and play in the garden as it is completely enclosed. Our stay was too short and we will definitely return in the future. Many thanks Silke for a wonderful stay.

Wonderful stay

5 of 5
The apartment was perfect for our requirements and was just as advertised. It was clean, tidy, quiet and we were very well looked after by our hosts. Weeze had everything we needed and is a lovely town which is centrally located for visiting the surrounding area. We would certainly recommend anyone to stay here if they are looking to visit the area. One point to note, the house is on a small dead end lane of 3 houses on the right hand side as you approach, we went down the main lane and initially could not find the apartment until we looked across the small field. We would certainly like to return and spend another holiday here, it was wonderful.
