It’s also a city with a surprising amount of waterways – in the summer months you can hire a canoe and paddle your way around Hamburg’s upmarket neighbourhoods next to the Alster – the large body of water at the heart of the city. Lübeck is a little closer, and is a location with a fascinating history. It was the capital of the Hanseatic League of trading cities, and today boasts a great deal of history within its UNESCO listed centre.
