Make a holiday rental in Franconia, Germany your home away from home

Franconia is a region towards the north of the German federal state of Bavaria. Staying at holiday rentals in Franconia you’ll be in a very diverse part of the country, boasting an inviting mix of history, natural scenery and outdoor recreation for all the family.

Things to do in Franconia, Germany

Nuremberg would be a good location for your holiday accommodation in Franconia. It’s Bavaria’s second city and has immense historical importance, and is also quite unique in that much of its heritage survived the war. The best place to start would be the city’s historical centre, dominated to the northwest by the castle, which features the five-cornered tower, dating to the 11th Century, making it the oldest remaining structure in the city. Another interesting sight is the medieval city walls, four kilometres of which are still standing today. Another excellent attraction is the zoo, which is located at Schmausenbuck Hill and considered one of the best in Europe.

For outdoor fun, perhaps the best setting for a Franconia self-catering holiday rental would be Franconian Switzerland, which has been a fresh-air getaway for generations of Germans. For especially daring visitors, it’s considered one of Europe’s rock-climbing hotspots thanks to the limestone. For everyone else there’s great scenery for walking and mountain biking, and the rivers in the region offering lovely spots for day-trips. Another highlight of this region is its brewing culture, with practically every community offering its own beer.

Another essential place to explore during your visit to Franconia holiday accommodation would be Bamberg, as the entire town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s a tremendous array of immaculately preserved medieval architecture here, with half-timbered buildings, best represented by the riverside Altes Rathaus.

Places to visit on holiday in Franconia, Germany

The city of Augsburg is within driving distance of Franconia self-catering accommodation and boasts a number of interesting sights. There’s the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest example of welfare housing, dating to the 16th Century and still in use today. Also in the centre is the birthplace of Marxist writer Bertolt Brecht, the 17th Century Rathaus and Renaissance Fugger Stadtpalast, from the 1500s.

Weather in Franconia, Germany

At Franconia holiday rentals you can expect a Continental Climate, which means warm weather in the summer months, when temperatures often get up to 30 degrees in July and August. Winters tend to very chilly here, with sub-zero conditions common from December to February.

Cheap flights to Franconia, Germany

The main air transport hub for the region around self-catering accommodation in Franconia is Nuremberg Airport (NUE), in Middle Franconia, with flights to and from London-Gatwick (LGW) with Air Berlin.

Very clean and well equiped house in a quiet location just a short walk from the town. We enjoyed our stay very much...the house is beautiful and roomy. Thanks Claudia for being so helpful with the booking etc and on our arrival. Paul

It's not really a holiday destination, but you can have a great holiday here!

We had a great week here for our family reunion. The best aspects for us were: 1. Very comfortable, well-equipped, clean property. 2. The kids loved the garden and outdoor games (table tennis, badminton, football goal). 3. Good facilities within walking distance: - A well-stocked Lidl (and other shops) just down the road. - Great trampoline place about 10 mins walk away (12 Euros for an hour). - Lovely outdoor swimming pool with loads of space around it, water slide, diving boards etc. - only 3 Euros for adults and free for the kids! Chilly water in the morning, but it warms up in the afternoon. About 25 mins walk into town. - There's a pleasant walking route to the train station through countryside (aim for the trampoline place, keep going, then turn left onto the path). Takes about 25 mins. 4. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a real treasure (about 30 mins on the train). We loved walking round the city walls, soaking up the atmosphere in the market square and chilling-out in the Castle garden. 5. Nice walks in the woods - but although the garden is next to them, you need to walk for 15 mins on the roads to reach the main path in. 6. Charming hosts (Daniela and Rainer) who were very helpful and speak excellent English. For eating out we had good meals at: - The German restaurant at the far (north) end of town. It's on a corner, I can't remember its name. - The Greek restaurant (on the right just as you go through the arch into the old town). If you need a taxi, ask Daniela for Herr Arndt's number. Nice man. Also, he now knows where the Gluck house is, which will help you :-) Our only suggestions for improvement at the property are very minor: - Perhaps add a mirror and a bin in each room. - A good simple cheese grater would have helped my spaghetti bolognese. - A bit more clothes-hanging space in some rooms (more hooks) would help. Two things for other guests to note: A. On the HomeAway paperwork, it looks like the 200 Euros breakages deposit is included in what you've paid. It isn't! B. Unlike in the UK, you get charged separately for the electricity and water (90 Euros for us). In summary, Germany and its people made a great impression on us. Despite the UK's stupid Brexit nonsense, almost everyone we met was kind and helpful, and very forgiving of our rather weak German language skills. (Apart from the train lady at the station who just watched as we struggled to work the ticket machine!)
