My uncle has lived in the UK for longer than he lived in his native Germany but has been visiting Cologne for 20 years with his friend, sadly his friend is now too elderly to travel without carers so I took my uncle, along with my nephew and his girlfriend for a 4 night trip.
They used to book a hotel near the main train station, and I did go once with them but once we had all got home from a mean (and his beloved Papa Joe's Klimperkasten!) the only thing we could do was head off to bed as there was nowhere where we could sit and have a coffee.
At first he was a little sceptical, he loved having breakfast that he could just go and sit down to, but when I pointed out he could have breakfast ...... and not by a certain time, he seemed to come around to the idea.
So roll on a week after staying in the apartment and he can't wait to go back! He loved it.
Erika is a lovely host.
We decided to get a taxi from the airport which was a little over €40, but between 4 of us it wasn't so bad, and really nice not having to lug cases and bags around on the trains.
So a little about the area:
It's too far for my uncle to walk to the Alte Stadt where the cathedral is, but for more able bodied, it's about 20-30 minutes. A taxi will cost you around €11
The apartment is fabulous! Lots of space, a beautiful modern kitchen (took me a while to figure out the cooker) and every utensil you could ever need.
There is a balcony with a large table where you could sit to eat when the weather is good.
A huge master bedroom with the biggest bed in the world, there is a surprise also but I won't spoil it!
A smaller double room is just off the kitchen which my nephew and his girlfriend took, and my uncle slept on the sofa bed in the lounge. When I say slept ... he napped a little while watching the German TV channels, although he did say it was very comfortable. Extra bedding is in the master bedroom.
Everything you could possibly need is in the apartment, however if you are planning on watching English TV, the channels are very limited. Bring your laptop to watch Netflix :)
There is a variety of shops/bars/restaurants just 5 minutes walk away including a large Lidl.
Right opposite the apartment block is an Irish pub which we visited on a couple of nights, the landlord is super friendly.
Getting the key was a little tricky but when you do find it (and you will) it is simply a genius idea!
100% recommend staying here and I am about to book our second trip this year.
If you are looking to stay in central Cologne, look no further. The flat is on a quiet road but only a 3 minute walk to restaurants, supermarkets, pubs, etc in Nippes. Take a short public transport ride and you're in the heart of Cologne.
The flat was spacious enough for us (two adults, plus two kids (a one and a three year old), clean and nicely decorated. We were even provided with a travel cot for our youngest. Access was also very convenient without difficult arrangements on key exchange.
Previous reviews remarked on the kitchen - yes it's basic which the summary already highlights. In our view it provided more than expected: There was a microwave, coffeemaker, kettle and fridge, sink, crockery, etc - enough to have breakfast and store milk for bottles or heat up a quick snack. We didn't need or want more as eating out is so convenient in Nippes.
Thank you Siepermann family for being so friendly and accommodating. We have bookmarked this flat for future visits!
