Make a holiday rental home or villa in Vitrac, France your home away from home

The rustic village of Vitrac stands among the forests of Perigord Noir, just 5km from Sarlat. Located right in the heart of the most beautiful and historic region of the Dordogne, known as the ‘pre-historic capital of Europe’, Vitrac is the perfect base for exploring the castles, caves and chateaux of the Dordogne, not to mention the charming medieval market towns and stunning countryside the region is famed for.

Things to do in Vitrac, France

Family holidays to Vitrac are always a hive of activity. The whole area is crossed by footpaths, cycling routes and bridle paths, taking you through the forested hills and valleys to some of the more remote chateaux, cave and castles of Perigord Noir. Many days can happily be spent touring the countryside under the power of your own steam, and the beautiful Dordogne Valley is a wonderful place to fish, canoe or simply potter about on the river. Hot air balloon rides are a particularly special way to explore the region, and one which you will always remember with awe.

The region is also awash with public tennis courts, golf courses and even more obscure yet exciting facilities like aerial ropes courses for the fearless. Visitors can even enjoy paragliding from a holiday rental gite in Vitrac, which is a sure way to reinvigorate and excite during your holiday.

A holiday rental villa in Vitrac is the ideal place from which to explore the many marvels of the Dordogne. There is no need to organise your family each morning in order to make sure you can get to the stunning villages of La Roque-Gageac, Domme or La Roque St-Christophe, the Lascaux Caves or the castles of Baynac as all are within 20km, and remarkably easy to reach from Vitrac accommodation.

Places to visit on holiday in Vitrac, France

Regardless of how long you stay in self catering Vitrac accommodation, the huge appeal of Sarlat will be impossible to resist. Sarlat is not only the local capital, home to some of the finest restaurants, shops and galleries, but also looks like an open-air medieval museum. Sarlat’s medieval heritage is fantastic, with perfectly preserved buildings dating back many centuries providing the town with an almost fairytale atmosphere, despite being a thriving market town.

Weather in Vitrac, France

The summer months are an absolute joy in Vitrac. The period between late May and early October sees daily temperatures reaching a warm, yet not sweltering 28°C on a good day, and rain is extremely rare. The spring and autumn months are perfect for walking, riding or cycling holidays, as the rain remains infrequent, and daily temperatures are wonderfully balmy.

Travel to Vitrac, France

A hire car is strongly advised if you are taking a Vitrac holiday property.

Peaceful, comfortable, well equipped, great location

5 of 5
Attractive and well equipped house was a great base for our Dordogne vacation. We loved the peaceful setting in the woods along with the easy access to Sarlat, grocery stores, and lots of other great villages on the river. The house was interesting and a pleasant place to spend time, including the pool. Pleasant and helpful interactions with owner (by email) and caretaker. The only downsides for us were: 1. no wifi due to bad connection in the area 2. no boulangerie in walking distance (it was an easy drive but some roads too busy to walk).

Idyllic

5 of 5
Great house. I stayed there with my three teenage kids and set up was perfect for us. The house itself exceeded our expectations and was very relaxing. We'll be going back - thoroughly recommend it. Emmanuel is a super host - enthusiastically meeting us on arrival and making sure we settled in. The house is in the small village of Montfort - lives up to it's reputation as one of the prettiest small villages in France. Breathtaking setting and lovely for a wander around (the chateau itself is privately owned and note open to the public) With three restaurants and a small boulangerie / patisserie on your doorstep this is well set up for not having to do any major shopping. That said Sarlat is only 10 minutes away and is great for sightseeing (and there's a supermarket on the way home to stock up). We had other family staying nearby so we had to make sure we booked for the restaurants - well worth trying the two in the village early in your stay - you'll likely want to go back!! We used Bise as a base for spending quite a bit of time on the river - Soleil Plage is a 2km away and has a well run canoe/kayak hire - but again book at least a day or two before as there's a big campsite down there so they get booked up. For the adventurous there's a (quite steep) path down to the river from the top of the village - we managed to get a paddle board and a kayak down there to the river. If you do go kayaking I recommend doing at least two days - one day from upstream - a little more 'nature' oriented and should be obligatory for the view you get of the Cingle de Montfort and the Chateau. The other day head downstream to take in the classic castles and cliffs 'package'. WE LOVED OUR WEEK THERE - and Bise was the perfect base
