Things to do on holiday in Vannes, France

The historic centre of Vannes is a small, walled settlement focused tightly around the cathedral, which despite its size is filled with fascinating gems of medieval life. You can easily tour the centre on foot from accommodation in Vannes, Brittany. Amazingly, Vannes missed much of the allied bombing during WWII, leaving much of the original defences intact and as impressive as they ever were. Throughout the streets of both the old town and the newer, more cosmopolitan part of the town are some excellent little shops. Shopping in Vannes is of a very high quality, and you can pop into the Vannes Aquarium, Butterfly House or the Musee des Automates (mechanical toys) if you require a little inspiration!

After a hard morning sightseeing or shopping in Vannes, you can head down towards the port from your accommodation in Vannes, Brittany and take a tour of the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan, or you can hire a yacht and discover them for yourself. However, you are reminded that the majority of islands here are privately owned.

Outside the town, the coastline and rolling hills of central Morbihan are perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. Vannes is a great base for exploring the Morbihan countryside, and there are many places to visit. Horse riding in Vannes is especially popular, and there are a range of stables surrounding the town where you can take guided tours and hire horses.

Places to visit on holiday in Vannes, France

The village of La-Vraie-Croix is a delightful place to be, especially during the summer when the whole town is adorned with floral displays and the colourful blooms of many gardens. Walking and cycling in the surrounding countryside is a wonderful experience, but if you suffer from hay-fever, La-Vraie-Croix is possibly not an ideal destination in the summer!

St Gildas de Rhuys is a perfect destination for anyone wishing to do a little sailing from their holiday rental property in the Vannes area. Located on the sheltered shores of the Gulf of Morbihan, St Guildas de Rhuys sits on a long, sandy beach on an unspoilt peninsula jutting out into the sea.

Sarzeau also lies on the Rhuys Peninsula, with excellent beaches on both the Atlantic and Gulf of Morbihan sides, although those of the Atlantic coast are larger. The beaches are not the only attraction in Sarzeau though. The 13th Century Chateau de Suscinio and the various menhirs and dolmens which adorn the landscape are simply stunning.

Comfortable Apartment in Central Vannes

4 of 5
The apartment is located right in the centre of Vannes, with a gated parking space about 10 minutes walk away. It is comfortable and well equipped with excellent kitchen facilities. We enjoyed the sunny garden, but we had problems with intruders (neighbours?) coming into the garden in the middle of the night (and on one occasion throwing tomatoes through the window). The problem was resolved once the owner gave us a key to the garden access door. The apartment was perfect for two, but living conditions may be a little intimate for four as the toilet and bathroom are en-suite to the downstairs bedroom. The second bedroom, located in the loft space, is a little cramped and got uncomfortably hot on one or two nights. Overall we had a relaxing time and I would recommend this property to other couples or families. But make sure you get a key to the garden door and watch out for the slightly unhinged neighbour(s)!

A fantastic house with everything you could wish for

5 of 5
We really enjoyed our time at this property - it's more than a nice rental holiday home. The owners and the absolutely brilliant manager, Sylvie, go beyond what you'd typically expect to make sure that this place feels special and that you have a great time in the property. The house is very stylish and also very spacious and clean. It's excellent for cooking too and the outside space is perfect for entertaining.
