Make a holiday rental apartment or chalet in Tignes, France your home away from home

Tignes has become one of Europe’s leading skiing and snowboarding resorts. Set high in the French Alps, Tignes and neighbouring Val d’Isere are the only ‘snow-sure resorts’ in France, meaning that whenever you would like to take a holiday or skiing weekend, Tignes is sure to satisfy. Despite the excellent facilities and extensive options, Tignes is not only aimed at experienced skiers. There are phenomenal facilities for beginners too, including 7 ski schools, so family holidays to Tignes or mixed ability groups hoping to take a Tignes chalet are in luck. The vast majority of accommodation in Tignes is in the form of private, self catering chalets and apartment as opposed to hotels.

Things to do on holiday in Tignes, France

Two things spring to mind when you mention Tignes; snowboarding and skiing, but there are also a huge number of alternative activities to try.

Tignes and Val d’Isere share the huge skiing area know as L’Espace Killy, which is especially known for its magnificent off piste, made easily accessible by a maze of lifts. Tignes is also known as a haven for snowboarding. L’Espace Killy is home to a half pipe, boardercross course and some extensive freeriding. If you are looking to rent a Tignes chalet for skiing, don’t worry, the resort is still primarily a ski resort, and there are over 190km of piste and plenty of ski rentals in Tignes.

Alternatively, away from the piste, there are a huge amount of things to do if you don’t feel like skiing or snowboarding. You can try your hand at ice driving, hang gliding, skidoo driving, dog sledding, ice skating, paracending, ice climbing and ice diving, below the frozen lake surface.

Holiday rental accommodation in Tignes does not get a rest during the summer either. The Tignes glacier opens for skiing and snowboarding from the 23rd June until the 2nd September, meaning that you could take a chalet in Tignes and ski all year round! There is also a large snow park which acts as a liaison point.

In summer, the lake unfreezes too, allowing sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, and fishing, and on the shore, horse riding and play on Europe’s highest golf course thrive. Other alternatives for entertainment when you take a holiday rental chalet in Tignes include white water rafting, paragliding, 4x4 driving, trail biking, mountain biking, climbing, hiking and canyoning, so this really is a year round activity sports haven.

Places to holiday in Tignes, France

Val d’Isere is Tignes neighbouring resort, sharing the L’Espace Killy ski area. Val d’Isere has a reputation as a very smart, exclusive resort, with excellent nightlife running long into the night and a range of magnificent restaurants to choose from. It also has many great skiing facilities and some luxury ski chalets and apartments to rent.

Weather in Tignes, France

Being at such high altitude, average temperatures in Tignes are of course low. Having said this, temperatures are far milder than those found in the American ski resorts, and summers are particularly mild, making skiing on Tignes glacier a particularly pleasant experience.

Flights to Tignes, France

The ski resorts of the French Alps are not the easiest to reach, but there are plenty of viable options for getting to your rental accommodation in Tignes without wasting too much of your holiday. Chambery (CMF), Lyon (LYN) and Geneva (GVA) are all within three hours of Tignes, and there are numerous busses and fixed price transfers running from the airport to the resort.

CONVENIENT AND COMFORTABLE

4 of 5
We stayed in this property for five weeks in the Summer of 2017, skiing on the Grande Motte glacier. L’Ecrin des Neiges is well located at the entrance to Val Claret. There are bus stops immediately outside the apartment building which can be used to get to the Grande Motte lift system, or to travel to other parts of the resort. Alternatively, Grande Motte is about an 8 minute walk away. Access to the upper level shopping area of Val Claret is by elevator, which is conveniently positioned close by to the apartment building. A few steps from the top of the elevator is a good, “Sherpa” supermarket and artisan bakery, as well as other shops and restaurants. However, many of these close out of season so for our first week in the resort we had to travel to Tignes du Lac for shopping. For those driving, there is a good underground car park in L’Ecrin des Neiges. The apartment is comfortable, with a good balcony, and is generally well-equipped. As long-stay guests we probably cooked for ourselves more than the average holidaymaker. The kitchen area is small but does contain everything you need, and we were able to produce some high-quality meals. The property comprises three bedrooms, together with a living/dining area and open kitchen. There is a family bathroom and separate toilet, as well as an en-suite shower room and toilet in the master bedroom. The bedrooms are on the small side, but were perfectly adequate. Be aware, though, that although two of the bedrooms have views to the outside, the third has a window into the main corridor of the apartment building and has no natural light. One drawback for us was the lack of washing machine/drier in the apartment. There is a washing machine and drier available to the residents of the L’Ecrin des Neiges apartment building, but this is shared with other apartments and was often in use. To use the machine you must buy tokens from the front desk. Despite the (relatively minor) shortcomings, overall this apartment is well appointed, comfortable, pleasantly furnished and well located. The owner was very easy to deal with and very responsive to our needs, and Tignes Angels, who provided local concierge services, were equally helpful and responsive.
