Located at the northern end of the Dordogne, Thiviers is a small commune that is known as the ‘Capital of the Foie Gras’. Like many of the towns in this area of France, Thiviers has a thriving weekly market, friendly locals and a bustling town centre, but being in the heart of the Perigord Vert region it is also surrounded by miles of rural countryside, making Thiviers an excellent destination for those that simply want to get away from it all.

Things to do in Thiviers, France

The area north-east of Dordogne is often called Perigord Vert (Green Perigord) due to the number of rolling green hills, forests and farmlands that mark its landscape. This is rural France at its best, and Thiviers is the perfect example of a small Perigord Vert commune that the locals are proud of and the visitors flock to for authentic holiday experience in a small, traditional French town.

The greenery of the area means that hiking, walking and being at one with nature are all popular pastimes, and for the vast majority of the year the glorious sunny weather and warm temperatures are perfect for these activities. Cycling is another way of getting about, and around the historical town centre are a number of points of interest, including a museum dedicated to local earthenware – the Musee des faiences de Thiviers, which is inside the City Hall. There are also a number of excellent restaurants to be found in Thiviers, and you can be assured that they will only be serving the finest and freshest local produce at value for money prices.

The region around Thiviers is perfect for those that want to make local food and wine a key element of their stay. The town is in the very heart of the Truffle and Foie Gras region of France, and has a museum dedicated to the subject on Place Foch - the simply-named Musee du Foie Gras. There is also a duck and goose museum within the same building, and these museums are an excellent place to pick up some of the excellent pate to take back to your self-catering accommodation. There is also an excellent Tuesday morning market that should not be missed by any visitor.

A beautiful, peaceful, comfortable and remote farmhouse - nothing to disappoint

5 of 5
We had a really enjoyable and relaxing week here. The pool, patio and table tennis table were very well-used by everyone; especially the 18 - 20 years olds. Nikki (neighbour) was very friendly and helpful with suggestions of places to visit and Alan (the owner) called to check that everything was OK; we were very well looked after. We loved canoeing at Brantome – the river was quite low which meant we had to get out and help the boats over the weirs but that just added to the fun (make sure you wear suitable footwear!). The limestone caves nearby are worth visiting although rather commercial. The area is stunningly beautiful and extremely peaceful with lots of wildlife to spot. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend to large or small families - everything is perfect.

Amazing property, fab pool!

Les Valettes was simply stunning. Spacious, clean, tastefully decorated, well equipped, and in a lovely tiny little village with everything you need nearby, lovely English neighbours who made us feel very welcome during our week and some interesting French characters including the Mayor close by, a car is a must! We could have spent all week just at the Gite but there are so many lovely towns and villages nearby that it’s worth exploring a bit. We are a family with an 11 yr old daughter who spent many hours in the amazing very welcome private pool, and the layout of bedrooms and bathrooms was ideal. The weather was very hot so the two fans were very welcome, although as we occupied just two of the rooms they may want to add more fans should all the bedrooms be occupied in future. We would love to return and would definitely recommend this house to others, we had the pleasure of meeting the owners Nicola and Tony were lovely with super communication. An amazing place, Nicola and Tony you are very lucky!
