Ploermel 56800 - Morbihan, Southern Brittany, France - Discovery the Ploermel area of Morbihan

Ploermel is a growing town virtually on the crossroads between Rennes [Capital of Brittany] and Vannes [Coastal walled city]. It is part of the Morbihan area and enjoys the climate from the Gulf Stream and is only one hour away from the many beaches of the Gulf of Morbihan. Ploermel is also known as The City of Dukes due to its many surrounding chateaux [including the nearby Josselin chateau] and its lake, man-made by the medieval dukes by flooding a village and valley. The Lac au Duc has a man-made beach and safe swimming area, watersports hire and lessons, trampolining, volleyball and table tennis areas as well as a kid’s swimming pool with tubular slides. Around the lake area are cafes and ice-cream bars too.

Ploermel itself was once a walled city until 'friendly fire' in the 2nd World War destroyed much of its walls. It is now half medieval and half modern. It has a market on Fridays and many niche shops, including clothing and shoes, plus the usual banks. There are many restaurants and bars, all children friendly and all recommended. The town is spoilt for choice for supermarkets too as there are 3 large relatively new stores, SuperU, Intermarche and Leclerc as well as the smaller Lidl, Netto and Mutant stores are all around the edges of the town itself. A new Cinema Complex and 10-pin bowling alley [with excellent restaurant] adds to the delights of the town. Not to forget McDonalds!!

Easy access by good fast quiet roads to the coastal areas including Carnac, La Baule and the busy thriving capital of Rennes make this a superb central location whatever the weather.

In the summer months Ploermel hosts live bands - free - in its streets and squares, usually on a Thursday in August but part of the Festival of Music throughout the area in early July through to late August too. There is always something going on nearby! For a really friendly area come to the Ploermel for your next holiday in Brittany.

Highly recommended, ticks all the boxes

5 of 5
The Old Farmhouse was our venue for a superb 10 day extended family holiday. Hosts Phil and Jenny were warm, welcoming and informative, attentive but not intrusive. The accommodation is outstanding, 6 large bedrooms all ensuite which allows privacy when required, three large communal areas kitchen, lounge and bar/dining area which comfortably seat a large number of people when eating or socialising. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, plus there are plenty of fridges and a freezer in the kitchen and bar area, which easily cope with the demands of a large family/group. The standard of cleanliness throughout the property was outstanding, with excellent attention to detail. The outside area has a very pleasant pool and hot tub area - fenced and locked so safe for children of all ages, 2 spacious patios ideal for a BBQ and beautifully tended gardens - again, fenced all round so very safe. The Games room provides ample entertainment for everyone in the unlikely event of rain. Wifi available if required. The local area is interesting, Josselin is a town worth visiting more than once for a stroll or to eat. Ploermel has an Activity lake with plenty going on. Carnac is slightly further away but well worth a day out to visit the Megaliths and enjoy a meal at nthe seaside town of Trinite-sur-Mer. A superb holiday was had by all, everyone thought the accommodation was great value for money.

Absolute perfection!

5 of 5
We wanted peace and quiet and we found it in spades! The cottage is situated in a very rural area but very conveniently situated being only a short drive to so many different place like Josselin, Ploermel, Pontivy etc, it couldn't be easier to get around. The cottage itself is so quaint and romantic! It was an old bread oven (not sure when it was last used) but has been beautifully renovated and has everything that you could possibly want...even if it does have dodgy wifi but then so does the rest of France! We were lucky that we had good weather even though it was already mid-September so we could eat some meals in the garden and relax on the sun loungers with a book and a glass of wine. The garden is amazing, very peaceful and great for a spot of bird-watching, we even saw a fox cub in the field at the back of garden! Sandra was a lovely host and very welcoming (there was even a bottle of Champagne in the fridge waiting for us!) and she helped us to book restaurants for dinner and reccomneded where to go. We were amazed that we could get a 4 course meal, with a choice of wine or cider, for 15 euros each!! At the price we ate out nearly every night! We used the bikes and cycled into Josselin along the towpath, its very flat and safe so even more 'mature' people like us didn't have to make too much effort. We usually go to a different place in France every year but we might break with this tradition and come back to Petite Bourgrimaud again in the future. It really is perfect.
