Make a holiday rental villa or gite in Tarn et Garonne your home away from home

The department of Tarn et Garonne lies in the south west of France, in the Midi Pyrenees region. Carved into five distinct regions by the multiple rivers which cross the department, there is a holiday rental to suit every holiday maker.

Things to do on holiday in Tarn et Garonne

Fishing on the rivers Tarn, Garonne and Aveyron are beautiful places to walk and fish. There are 1,400 km of fishable rivers in Tarn et Garonne, and numerous lakes too, although a fishing permit is required. With so much water in the department, there are of course many water based activities to enjoy from a Tarn et Garonne holiday rental gite.

Tarn et Garonne is mainly a rural region with a dispersed population, making it ideal for walking, horse riding and mountain biking. There are national walking trails marked across the countryside, from short strolls to major hikes, and there are plenty of options if you are looking to rent a holiday rental villa in Tarn et Garonne. The same goes for cycling and mountain biking, and bike hire is readily available.

There are limited golfing options from a Tarn et Garonne gite. There are many 9 hole golf courses around, but 18 hole courses are harder to find.

Places to holiday in Tarn et Garonne

In the north of the department consists of the Quercy Hills, a beautiful rural region dotted with small medieval towns, encircled by fortifications. Of special note is the town of Lauzerte, which is worth visiting if just to see the Roman apse and the beautiful church. It is a region of wine production and marvellous gastronomy.

The Gasgcogne Hills dominate the south of the department. In the south, golf and sailing on the large lakes take up many hours for holiday makers in a Tarn et Garonne holiday rental from April until November.

You cannot fail to be amazed by Gallo Roman village of Caylus, which clings to the rocky gorges of the Aveyron, with its long and intriguing history. You may recognise some of the scenery from the film “Charlotte Grey”.

St Antonin Noble Val is among the oldest settlements in this part of France, perfectly situated for exploration of the department on horseback, bicycle or on foot.

Weather in Tarn et Garonne

Temperatures in Tarn et Garonne during the summer are beautifully mild, with daily temperatures peaking in the mid 20’s (°C), meaning that activity is possible even at midday in the height of the summer.

Flights to Tarn et Garonne

Both Toulouse (TLS) and Rodez Airport (RDZ) are within easy reach of a property in Tarn et Garonne. The TGV runs from Paris to Toulouse in just a few hours, and car rental centres are plentiful.

Very nice place to hang out for a week - the swimming pool really makes it.

5 of 5
Josette and Richard were the perfect hosts and were very attentive at all times. The cottage is small and the bathroom very French but the whole experience was really pleasant and relaxing. Far eenough in the country side to be very calm but only 10 minutes in Saint Antonin for shopping, bars etc. A lovely big pool all to yourselves and very well cared for by Richard

Beautiful townhouse with pool and spectacular view

5 of 5
Wonderful! The house, garden and pool are even lovelier than the photos and the pool is clean and warm. We had full privacy despite the pool being shared with the owners property next door. Marie Claire is a great hostess and always responded to my questions promptly. The place is fully stocked and we had everything we needed. I can highly recommend Mansion Lauzerte. Thank you! Some useful info: The gorgeous ground bedroom with the poster bed has an en-suite bathroom (the roll-top bath plus a separate shower) with washing machine / tumble dryer in a cupboard. This bathroom has a separate access to the hallway. The ground floor includes the kitchen/dining and informal lounge area opening out onto a balcony overlooking garden and pool. Interior stairs lead down to the outside. The first floor has one bedroom (with additional child's bed) and the formal lounge (with the wi-fi hot-spot). Separate bathroom with a shower. On the second floor, there is a charming rustic bedroom with the black and white tiled shower room positioned like an open mezzanine to the bedroom with a half wall for privacy, so a couple sharing need to be comfortable with this arrangement. Be prepared to look for a parking space as cars park in the narrow streets (right near the front doors) so we couldn't always park outside or at the owners garage. However, we always found a space, often just outside the property. Finding a parking space became a quirky feature of our holiday and is typical of medieval towns. If arriving on a Sunday afternoon, it is not easy to do any shopping on Sunday and Monday. My advice is to ask if any essentials could be provided (which I hadn't considered) or do essential food shopping at the airport in the morning or any supermarket you see open. They all tended to shut by midday. We ate at the pizzeria at the lower square on the Sunday evening. Generally, restaurants on the upper square shut early and we got turned away looking for a meal at 9pm because they were closing (despite other customers still eating). However a restaurant (almost opposite the Pizzeria) run by a Belgium and Scottish couple took us in -- they have a charming enclosed eating area at the rear of the property. In the end, we didn't eat in Lauzerte's upper square restaurants or visit the bars. Lunch times are also strict, mainly 11 - 1pm. Basically, plan for shopping and eating within the customary times. We ended up shopping at the supermarket just outside of Lauzerte.
