Slyvie's property is set right at the mouth of the Vezere valley with easy access to both that and the Dordogne, even the Lot and Causses du quercy are barely an hour by car. The property itself is large and spacious and beautifully decorated with all mod cons. Slyvie herself is a delight and you could not ask for a more helpful or welcoming host. Merci Slyvie
Before I comment further on the property itself I think its important to understand that it is a gite not a house or villa. This is not entirely clear on the website description. I say this because the psychology of staying on the site of someone's property where they continue to live is completely different to a house which is entirely yours for a week or two.
The accommodation is next to the owners own house with no barriers between the two. There is a very good and large garden that we used extensively for playing games and for BBq's. The pool and hot tub are an added bonus though on hot days the temperature inside can be too warm.
The accommodation itself is of a good size with three bedrooms. The main bedroom looks like it was decorated recently or was added on separately. Both the room and the Ensuite is large though the shower cubicle is small, which seemed strange given the size of the room. Living area was comfortable and kitchen useable, but dated. The other two bedrooms also appeared to be relatively old but again comfortable though one did smell of damp after rain.
Our hosts were great! A lovely family, cute dog and very helpful, but I would have personally preferred more privacy as they often were carrying out jobs on the garden, painting walls and using the pool when we were at the accommodation, you have to remember though, its a gite and you are a guest in their home.
The property is close to a small village with a shop, boulangerie and a couple of restaurants. The boulangerie sold the best croissants I've ever had. Its also close to Hautefort Chateau which is well worth a visit.
If you like peace and quiet its fantastic, but you have to travel for 30-45 minutes to see any of the larger towns such as Perigueux (Its great) Sarlat (Too Touristy but worth seeing) or Montignac (small but lovely).
Overall we were happy with our stay though one gripe was that we were not given the choice to pay for someone to do the cleaning at the end of our stay. This meant we spent a lot of Friday afternoon cleaning floors and dusting when we could have been doing something more interesting. I know this is normal for a gite and not unusual in France generally, but a pre determined cost to pay for cleaning after you leave, given the 6 hours between you leaving and a new arrivals, does not seem a lot to ask when you are meant to be on holiday.
