We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. A beautiful, spacious, well equipped house with lovely original features and furniture, typical of the area. The garden is big and private. There's even a separate games room with table football and table tennis. We were greeted by a very helpful and friendly neighbour with the key on arrival who was very attentive, showing us around the property and ensuring we were settled in. Antoine also contacted us to welcome us and make sure all was well. The town of Charnay-les-Macon with shops is only a 5 minute drive away but we found a lovely way to walk to it daily, through the pretty village (20-30 minutes). Although we could hear the motorway it wasn't bothersome. There is a pretty church in the village with a view of the stunning countryside from behind it including La Roche de Solutre. All the surrounding villages are very pretty and the town of Cluny particularly so. We hired bicycles cheaply from the tourist information hut on the outskirts of Charnay by the disused railway where you can cycle safely off road for miles. Luckily we had superb weather and Charay-les-Macon is a great spot from which to explore this beautiful part of France. We even took a day trip to Geneva from here. Many thanks to Antoine.
The accommodation is situated in a beautiful area of France and provides plenty of room for large family, or other gatherings. There are several bedrooms with two or more beds and most bedrooms enjoy ensuite bathrooms (only one toilet ensuite), mostly with showers but some with a bath/shower. The garden is large and there are sufficient places to sit in or out of the sun. The balcony is a pleasant place to sit, with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside and towards the Roche de Vergisson. There is a lot of room for parking cars.
The accommodation is built on the side of a hill, is on three floors and quite quirky in design. All of the living rooms are of a good size, although the weather was so good during our stay that we did not need to use them all. There was quite a lot of clutter around the house and this must make the house almost impossible to clean. When we arrived, the house was not perfectly clean after the previous visitors. Most of the facilities we needed for 14 of us were available but there were very few tumblers for drinks – plenty of very small glasses but almost no larger ones.
In the garden, there was no provision of sun-loungers – we did find some and used them but they belonged to the person who lives in the other house on the plot! There were actually none provided at the property that we could find. In addition, several of the plastic seats for sitting around the garden tables were weak, brittle and, in a couple of cases, dangerous.
None of these issues spoilt our holiday in any way. We thoroughly enjoyed the immediate surroundings and the wider local area and the size and layout of the accommodation was good for us. We enjoyed meeting the owner, Mark Andrews, who was very interesting about the area and seemed to be a very nice man. The cyclists, swimmers, wine drinkers and walkers in our party very much enjoyed the area with plenty of opportunities for all of these activities nearby.
We don’t usually return to areas or properties but we might make an exception in this case!
