Make a holiday rental home or chalet in St Jean-de-Sixt, France your home away from home

St Jean-de-Sixt is one of the trio of villages which make up the French Alps ski resort of Aravis, the others being La Clusaz and Grand Bornard. St Jean-de-Sixt has been popular with French and Swiss visitors for many years, although is nowhere near as popular with English-speaking tourists as Geneva. This is great news for visitors though - it means prices are generally lower and makes for a more authentic experience, with many villas and chalets around the village for those looking for a self-catering break.

Things to do in St Jean-de-Sixt, France

The main thing to do in St Jean-de-Sixt is of course skiing, or snowboarding if you prefer. St Jean-de-Sixt makes the perfect destination for skiers of all abilities, with slopes for beginners to advanced dare-devil skiers.

When all the adrenaline-filled activities get a little too much, visitors to St Jean-de-Sixt can relax at one of the many cafes and bars to be found on the doorstep to their villa. There are also weekly markets and cow fairs which visitors can browse and get a taste for true French Alpine life.

Summer visitors will also not be left bored, with mountain biking, hiking, paragliding, horse riding, canyoning and hot air ballooning all on offer in the town or close by. Summer is a great time to visit, as the village overflows with blooming alpine flowers and is less crowded than in the winter.

During the summer months, St Jean-de-Sixt also plays host to several mountain festivals, where visitors can join in with regional activities, watch traditional music and dance performances, and taste regional food and drink.

Places to visit on holiday in St Jean-de-Sixt, France

The town of Annecy, perched on the shores of Lac d’Annency, is worth a visit for both summer and winter visitors. Most visitors will be impressed by the striking bridges and buttressed arcades found in the centre of the town as well as the typical Savoyard style houses.

The Saint-Gervais, Mont-Blanc region is less than 40km from most St Jean-de-Sixt villas, where visitors can ride the historic tramway, visit art galleries and studios and relax in the thermal spa.

Weather in St Jean-de-Sixt, France

St Jean-de-Sixt has a typical Alpine climate, with temperatures in the summer reaching up to 20C but falling below 0C in the winter months. Rainfall is quite low all year-round, but snow can be heavy over the winter, one of the reasons for which St Jean-de-Sixt is such a great place for skiers.

Flights to St Jean-de-Sixt, France

St Jean de Sixt is most easily accessed by flying into Geneva Airport (GVA). The airport is on the border with Switzerland and has a French sector specifically for those wishing to holiday in France, which means that passengers don’t require a Swiss visa. St Jean-de-Sixt is then 65km from the airport. Hiring a car is the easiest mode of transportation to your self-catering accommodation, and this is available in the French side of the terminal.

Suitable for any type of break you want to have !

5 of 5
A very well appointed and equipped accommodation, which is located in a stunning location with a view from virtually every window. Suitable for pretty much any type of break you want to have due to the location. Peace and quiet of a rural location, yet only a few km from Thônes centre which pretty much has most of what you would need. Annecy is half an hours drive. Winter rentals are well catered for with Chamonix, La Clusaz and others close by. David the owner is rightly proud of the holiday let and is happy to advise on any aspect of the rental and the local surroundings, all in a great find. We would be very happy to return when in the area again!

Great chalet, well located, well appointed, very comfortable

4 of 5
This was a beautiful chalet in a fabulous setting. It was clean, and the bed particularly was very comfortable - something quite unusual normally in holiday rentals. The key collection was simple, and Delphine met us exactly as arranged. English renters should know that ‘Linen included’ means only bed sheets, duvet cover, duvet and tea towels - it does not include hand or bath towels. The kitchen was very well equipped, with plenty of cooking equipment and crockery etc., but we did notice the absence of some key items such as cheese grater, tin opener, glass bowl & kitchen scissors. We didn’t ask for them once we noticed, but we are sure that Delphine would have fixed it quickly if we had, but these items should be made available in the future. The electricity & water are charged by meter reading, which we knew in advance from reading the reviews, and it was good that it was priced exactly as it costs them from the supplier - so often when these utilities are extra, the owners mark up the cost and make themselves extra profit, so it was great to see that it didn’t happen here. The position locally was quiet, but all the facilities of Thônes were just a 3 minute drive away. We ate at the hotel in Thônes where Delphine worked, the food was good and well priced. We are cyclists, so being at the foot of some great climbs was good too. . The lost star is because of something we can’t abide - extra charges announced on arrival - an end of stay cleaning charge, unless we wanted to clean it thoroughly before we left. The description on Owners Direct does say ‘housekeeper optional’, but I don’t think anyone would directly translate that as meaning ‘cleaning charge payable, unless you do it yourself’. This kind of problem was pointed out in a review in March, when a group were surprised on arrival to find electricity charged for, and 3 months later this too has still not been updated in the property details. I can appreciate that these charges may be normal in a ski resort area?, but it is wrong that they are not clear on the website.
