Located in one of the very finest parts of the Dordogne

Things to do in St Chamassy, France

St Chamassy is located in an idyllic woodland setting, in the heart of the Perigord Noir, which provides the perfect base for hour upon hour of walks and nature trails. The majority of attractions in the area are related to nature in some way, with cycling, horse riding and hiking also popular. Those that prefer their activities of the water-based variety can also enjoy some excellent canoeing on the nearby Dordogne River.

Although basic amenities can be found in St Chamassy, the neighbouring village of Le Bugue is the best place to head for a wider range of banks, shops, cafes and bars – as well as an excellent weekly market. Le Bugue lies 7km to the north of St Chamassy, however, and due to the rural nature of this part of the Dordogne, the use of a hire car is strongly advised when staying here, in order to get around and enjoy a vacation to its fullest. Car hire is best booked in advance, with most airports in the region offering collection points.

Places to visit on holiday in St Chamassy, France

After you have re-charged your batteries and enjoyed what St Chamassy has to offer, consider venturing out and enjoying the remainder of the Perigord Noir. The region dates back to pre-historic times, and the old cave paintings at Font de Gaume (near the village of Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil [17km]) have always been popular with visitors. The capital of the Perigord Noir is Sarlat, which lies 29km from St Chamassy.

Weather in St Chamassy, France

The climate in the Perigord Noir is one of warm summers and mild winters, so a holiday in St Chamassy really can be enjoyed at any time of the year. July and August are the hottest months, with average daily high temperatures of around 30°C, whilst 20°C plus temperatures are still common well outside of peak season.

Travel to St Chamassy, France

43km to the west, Bergerac – Roumaniere Airport (EGC) is the most popular choice of airport for those staying in St Chamassy, and receives a wide range of flights from Great Britain and Ireland, particularly through low-cost airlines. Bordeaux Airport (BOD) is the nearest ‘non budget’ alternative, but adds at least another hour onto transfer time.

Spacious secluded property in perfect location with fascinating history. Love this place!

5 of 5
We stumbled across this property while searching through the hundreds on various websites. We are a family of 5 and were looking for something a little bit different among the masses of pricey boutique properties let at a premium. This was perfect! My husband was keen to tell me it used to be owned by an artist! I already knew of Josephine Baker and delighted in telling him she was an 'Artiste' not an artist! We watched a few YouTubes about her life before coming which gave us some history of her life, and significance of the house, the Chateau and the region. The house has 4 bedrooms, 2 of which have a curtain to divide which was fine for the kids. One bedroom is downstairs which we used with an en-suite shower room. The lounge/kitchen/diner is spacious with TV/DVD/wifi. As previous reviewers have mentioned, the bins are down a road opposite the house and it was no issue to wander over or drop the bags off on our way out each day. All thinkable equipment is provided. Hairdryers in rooms too. Towels and linen are available to hire. The gardens are stunning with the historic round houses which once accommodated the guests of Josephine Baker for her performances at the Park opposite. The pool, although unheated, was perfectly ok to use and was refreshing to bomb in to cool off on hot days. Great pool security features with water motion sensor alarm. Phillippe is a lovely gentleman who can speak good enough English to explain everything about the house. He was always available if we needed anything at all. He has provided an extensive categorised collections of tourist information which was very useful for finding places to visit, restaurants and canoe hire places. (Canoe on the Dordogne is a must). The house is at the foot of the Chateau des Milandes (another must) which is a short walk up the drive and even shorter ride if you take a selection of the well maintained bikes that Phillippe also provides. The location of this property is perfect. Off the beaten tourist track but no more than about 15 minute drive to most places of interest. Caves, gardens, Sarlat, La Roque, Castelnaud and canoeing. You can do it all without travelling far at all. There are a couple of supermarkets nearby where prices are reasonable. Worth visiting and making good use of the great BBQ on the terrace. Already miss seeing the sunrise over the picturesque hills in the morning with coffee. We highly recommend this house and would love to return!
