Make a holiday rental home or villa in Savoie, France your home away from home

The French Savoie Alps are the most popular ski resorts in Europe. The ski resorts in Savoie are famous, known for their luxury chalet rentals, and exceptional winter sport facilities aimed for skiers of all abilities, ages and experience. The dramatic scenery also means that Savoie is open for holiday-makers during the summer. It is almost as famous for the walking, canyoning and rock climbing than it is for skiing.

Things to do on holiday in Savoie, France

The ski season is open from mid-December at the latest right through until the beginning of May, although snow conditions may deteriorate. This is not to worry about though. The region has over 1,000 snow cannons to help if natural conditions are not as they should be. On offer in Savoie is downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, heli-skiing, climbing, bobsleighing, snow-mobiles, swimming (indoor!), climbing, ice-climbing and much more. The health spas, cafes, restaurants and extensive shopping mean that there is still plenty of entertainment even on rest days!

During the summer, walking, climbing, mountain bilking and local festivals keep pulling visitors to rental chalets in Savoie.

Places to holiday in Savoie

La Plagne is a charming village, with close access to 10 ski resorts in Savoie. The facilities are varied, making a rental chalet here great value for family holidays. There is a bobsleigh track open to the public, natural and artificial ice-climbing walls, an ice rink, night skiing, youth clubs, dog sleighs carting and paintball available, not to mention the skiing!

La Plagne and Les Arcs, the adjacent resort, have together been dubbed 'Paradiski'! This is due to the combined 420km of piste, 158km of cross country skiing tracks, and the added facilities of Les Arcs, like the five snow parks, 3 boardercross tracks and the half-pipe.

The Three Valleys, famed as the largest ski resort in the world, has 600km of piste separated across 300 downhill runs! Here, snow is guaranteed, as Corcheval and Meribel, the resorts at the centre of the Three Valleys, has over 560 snow cannons.

The luxurious resort of Val d'Isere and her twin resort of Tignes have been described in the Good Ski Guide 2005 as one of only two 'sure-snow resorts'. This is due to their altitude. Tignes, despite some excellent black runs, also caters very well for beginners. It boasts 7 ski schools, and 5 free beginners’ lifts, as well as 150 shops in case the skiing gets too much! Val d'Isere is also the place to try out some ice-driving or snow-mobiling!

Weather in Savoie

Summer temperatures average at 21°C, perfect for rock climbing, mountaineering and walking, but winter temperatures are cold. Temperatures this high in the Alps average around 0°C during the winter.

Travel to Savoie

Savoie is serviced by three airports, all roughly 3-3.5 hours from the ski resorts. Chambery Airport (CDG) Lyon and Geneva all receive flights from the UK, and cheap flights are often on offer from Exeter and Norwich on Flybe. However, there are flights from many airports, and provided by many airlines, so it is worth shopping around.

Excellent summer walking

5 of 5
Very good well equipped apartment with views of Mont Blanc and the lively village square. The swimming pool, sauna steam room were never too crowded, just what was needed after a long day walking. Many excellent walks from the door, or up one of the lifts. All levels of walking available from gentle strolls from the lift or bus to full day mountain hikes. We averaged 16Km with around 700m of ascent. Paradise for the flower-lover, although a little earlier in the season might be even better. For the geeks, fragrant orchids, black vanilla orchid, frog orchid, martagon lily and globeflower were among the more unusual. I'm not a skier, but this is perfect for summer walking.

CONVENIENT AND COMFORTABLE

4 of 5
We stayed in this property for five weeks in the Summer of 2017, skiing on the Grande Motte glacier. L’Ecrin des Neiges is well located at the entrance to Val Claret. There are bus stops immediately outside the apartment building which can be used to get to the Grande Motte lift system, or to travel to other parts of the resort. Alternatively, Grande Motte is about an 8 minute walk away. Access to the upper level shopping area of Val Claret is by elevator, which is conveniently positioned close by to the apartment building. A few steps from the top of the elevator is a good, “Sherpa” supermarket and artisan bakery, as well as other shops and restaurants. However, many of these close out of season so for our first week in the resort we had to travel to Tignes du Lac for shopping. For those driving, there is a good underground car park in L’Ecrin des Neiges. The apartment is comfortable, with a good balcony, and is generally well-equipped. As long-stay guests we probably cooked for ourselves more than the average holidaymaker. The kitchen area is small but does contain everything you need, and we were able to produce some high-quality meals. The property comprises three bedrooms, together with a living/dining area and open kitchen. There is a family bathroom and separate toilet, as well as an en-suite shower room and toilet in the master bedroom. The bedrooms are on the small side, but were perfectly adequate. Be aware, though, that although two of the bedrooms have views to the outside, the third has a window into the main corridor of the apartment building and has no natural light. One drawback for us was the lack of washing machine/drier in the apartment. There is a washing machine and drier available to the residents of the L’Ecrin des Neiges apartment building, but this is shared with other apartments and was often in use. To use the machine you must buy tokens from the front desk. Despite the (relatively minor) shortcomings, overall this apartment is well appointed, comfortable, pleasantly furnished and well located. The owner was very easy to deal with and very responsive to our needs, and Tignes Angels, who provided local concierge services, were equally helpful and responsive.
