Saussignac, France

Saussignac is just one of the many tiny villages that inhabit the Perigord Pourpre area of the Dordogne

Things to do in Saussignac, France

Saussignac holidays offer their participants many opportunities, and perhaps the main one is wine tasting. This part of France is a wine lover’s heaven, with a wide variety of vintages produced in the many vineyards in and around the village, including the sweet white dessert wine that carries the Saussignac name. The vineyards provide visitors with the perfect opportunity to try before they buy, and when it comes to buying you will also discover that purchasing direct from the source can be a value for money (and not to mention satisfying) experience.

Away from the wine tasting and vineyards, attractions in Saussignac continue the countryside theme. The village is rural and does not have an abundance of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants – but the beautiful natural countryside more than makes up for the lack of man-made facilities. Walking, hiking, cycling and horse riding are just some of the many activities that can be enjoyed in and around Saussignac, with late spring and early summer particularly good times in which to partake in these activities.

Places to visit on holiday in Saussignac, France

The villages that border Saussignac – such as Gageac et Rouillac (2km) - offer more of the same attractions, and though these are pleasant in their own right, you may be tempted to jump in the car and see what else the Perigord Pourpre area has to offer. One of the most popular visitor destinations in this part of the Dordogne is the Bastille town of Ste Foy le Grande (11km), whilst arguably the most well-known location in this wine area is Bergerac, which lies just 19km away, making it ideal for a day trip.

Weather in Saussignac, France

The 25°C – 30°C temperatures that are commonly found during summer months are easily the most popular for a vacation in Saussignac, but that does not mean that the village is a summer-only destination. If you are perfectly happy with warm temperatures and ever-so-slightly increased rainfall, you can find some bargain spring and autumn accommodation deals here.

Lovely 2 bed cottage on the Dordogne River

5 of 5
The cottage is in a wonderful location on the Dordogne River, it is very well equipped house and kitchen and felt like home during our stay. We were there early May and the little garden gets the sun all day and evening so we could eat outside. It was also lovely to sit out in the evening with a glass of wine and watch the swallows. There are lovely walks in both directions straight from the door and less than 5 min walk to get bread, pastries or wine from the local shop (bigger supermarkets or local markets are a short drive away). The hydro electric dam with fish lift, a short walk along the river, is fascinating and the canal, vineyards and little villages either side of the cottage made nice walks and good exploring. The cottage is very private but in a pretty little hamlet with other houses so not lonely and parking is easy. The Dordogne is stunning, the owner who lives in the village was very kind and the cottage lovely we will definitely go back.

Excellent location to explore the Dordogne

5 of 5
Stayed for four days in May to explore the region and generally relax. The location of the house is perfect, beautiful and very peaceful about 15 - 20 min walk from Monbazillac. The gite is well equipped with everything you need and a very comfy bed. The weather was great so we made full use of the swimming pool which is well maintained with plenty of furniture. Martin was very helpful and the gave us lots of information and recommendations on local bars and restaurants. Would definitely stay again, thoroughly recommended.
