Make a holiday apartment in Sartene your home away from home

A large part of Corsica’s charm is its historic towns and villages where the buildings with their red-tile roofs seem to hang precariously onto the hilltops. Many of these towns have a maze of little alleys to explore and cobbled squares where you can sit back, relax and watch everyday village life go by. With a Sartène holiday apartment, you can be part of it all. Holiday accommodation in Sartène comes in a variety of sizes, from properties sleeping as few as two people to ones sleeping as many as fifteen. Things to do

Sartène is located in the south-western part of Corsica and dates from medieval times. Built high on top of a hill, it overlooks a beautiful valley. Many of the historic buildings have remained and a stroll through the old part of town is like a journey back in time to the days when Sartène had to guard against attacks by pirates.

-The Museum of Prehistoric Corsica is in Sartene. Here you can find out more about the people who lived on the island long before the Genoese came: people like the Torre civilisation. You can also learn about the ancient taffoni burial chambers, where the dead were placed in natural openings in the area’s granite rock. The museum is a good place to start if you want to explore the prehistoric sites of the region.

-The Place de la Liberation is the ideal shady place to rest after a morning of exploring the town. This square is the heart of Sartène life, with a market and lined with many little shops and restaurants. Overlooking the square you’ll find the Church of Sainte Marie and the historic Town Hall.

-Easter weekend is an excellent time to book a Sartene holiday home. U Catenacciu takes place after sunset on Good Friday and marks the start of the celebrations. In a tradition that dates back some seven centuries, one townsperson is chosen to don a red hooded robe so that his or her identity is concealed. This person, known as the ‘Grand Penitent’, is shackled by the ankle and drags these chains across town while carrying a big, heavy wooden cross and is the focus of the Easter procession, which also includes penitents dressed in black. The procession begins and ends at the Church of Sainte Marie.

-Sartène’s wines are a particularly good choice. Most of the wines produced in the area are rosés but you’ll also find excellent reds and a small number of whites. Be sure to visit one or, even better, all of the local wineries to see and taste why oenophiles rave about the vintages that hail from Sartène.

-Propriano is only about 8.5 miles from Sartène and a great destination for a day’s outing to the beach. The beaches lining the Gulf of Valinco are sandy and white, with clear blue waters perfect for snorkelling and diving. Sailing and boat trips are popular activities too. Propriano is a relaxed port and there are many restaurants along the waterfront where you can have a leisurely lunch and watch the boats coming into or sailing out of the harbour.

The weather in Sartène

Sartène, like the rest of Corsica, has a Mediterranean climate with sunny summers and rainy, cool winters. Summer days can become very hot, with temperatures often soaring to around 31 °C, so you may want to opt for Sartène holiday accommodation equipped with air conditioning. Winters are cool, with maximum temperatures hovering around 14 °C but night-time temperatures dropping to around 5 °C. While there may be a little rain once in a while in summer, most of the rainfall in the area occurs in winter, especially from October to December.

Getting to Sartène

Getting to your holiday apartment in Sartène is very easy but it’s advisable to hire a car once you arrive in Corsica, since the public transport network isn’t very extensive. The nearest international airport to Sartène is Figari Sud-Corse Airport, a little over 27 miles to the south-east. In summer, Figari Sud-Corse Airport receives regular flights from various destinations all over Europe. Another easy option is to travel by ferry from Marseille to Propriano and then make the short journey to Sartène.

We had a lovely week at the apartment. The facilities were excellent. A 15 minute walk takes you into the town and a bit further on to the beach. The apartment is based in a central area with good road available for exploring further afield. We recommend it to anyone wanting enjoy this corner of Corsica.

A beautiful house in an excellent location.

Campomoro is one of our favourite places in Corsica and this house is in an ideal, quiet and peaceful location. For much of the time, we left the car and walked to the beach, the village and the spectacular walks in the area. The house is comfortable and well-equipped. We particularly enjoyed the two terraces, each with furniture for dining outside. The front has spectacular views of the Valinco Gulf and the tower, whist the rear has views of the maquis and forest. The charming owners gave us a warm and friendly welcome and we greatly enjoyed chatting to them over a bottle of Corsican wine. The road to Campomoro is not for the faint-hearted so it was an added bonus to find that work is in progress to widen and improve it! We had an excellent holiday here and would very much like to return. Astrid and Ray, Upminster, UK
