Make a holiday rental home or villa in Salazac, France your home away from home

The town of Salazac lies between the River Ceze and the River Ardeche in the Gard department of Languedoc-Roussillon. Located on the slopes of the foothills of the Cevennes Mountains, the medieval village can be seen from many miles, on its proud and prominent perch, which also provides astonishing views over the countryside when you wake up at a Salazac property rental.

Things to do in Salazac, France

The Provencial culture still lives on wonderfully strong in Salazac and its surrounding villages. The food and wine you will taste during a Salazac holiday are sure to delight, and there is no shortage of wine cellars, top family restaurants and large markets in which to buy the freshest ingredients should you decide to try your hand at local gastronomy from your self catering Salazac villa rental.

The medieval village has some wonderful attractions to explore. The ancient battlements form a fantastic walking route, perfect for getting your bearings and seeing a little of the surrounding countryside upon your arrival at a self catering Salazac villa, and the dramatic, angular Saint Clement’s Observatory should certainly not be missed. The whole area is adorned with stunning hilltop villages and ancient monuments, most notably the Roman amphitheatres of Nimes and Orange, the Pont du Gard and Palais de Papes in Avignon.

The region is famous for its outdoor sports credentials. The landscapes that surround Salazac are ideal for walking holidays, riding holidays and mountain biking breaks, with some excellent trails leading right past the front door of a Salazac villa. The astonishing landscapes of the Valbonne Forest are particularly popular to explore, but there are endless walking, cycling and riding trails up into the Cevennes and into the wood covered plains below.

Places to visit on holiday in Salazac, France

The Mediterranean coast is just an hour away too. During the blazing heat of July and August, the allure of the beach can be overpowering, regardless of whether your Salazac villa has a pool. Luckily, you can be swimming in the warm waters of the Mediterranean within an hour of leaving your Salazac property, and there are a great range of beaches to choose from. Whether you want a natural, secluded spot on which to sunbathe or would prefer to visit an activity fuelled seaside resort, you will be spoilt for choice.

There are an astonishing 300 days of sunshine each year in Gard. The summer seems to last for ever in Salazac, with the warm weather arriving in early May, reaching its peak in July and August (with daily temperatures often threatening the 40˚C mark), and lasting long into October. Walking and riding holidays thrive throughout the year as daily peak temperatures are never likely too much below 15˚C, regardless of the time of year.

Travel to Salazac, France

Nimes Airport (FNI) is just 55km from a Salazac holiday rental. Nimes is used by Ryanair, who provide a good range of direct flights, with services regularly arriving from Liverpool (LPL), Luton (LTN) and the East Midlands (EMA). A hire car is a necessary asset to have during a Salazac holiday, not only to allow a full exploration of the historic, coastal and rural attractions throughout Gard, but also for the shot journeys to local markets, restaurants and shops.

Pure French Perfection

5 of 5
Philippe and Sylvia are terrific hosts & Philippe was on hand to meet us with lots of great advice. Nothing is too much trouble. We arrived to find a crate stuffed with wonderful French produce including wine and homemade pear jam. The place was really clean and very well appointed with everything you need to cook, do your washing or simply chill and relax. The area is ideally located for visiting so many wonderful things - Avignon, Times, Les Baux-de-Provence, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Pont Du Gard etc. - yet is hidden away down a winding road and situated amongst the woods and vineyards. There is a vast network of tracks and paths meaning you can walk forever and never see another soul. Would definitely recommend it if you're looking for somewhere for a real taste of France.

Lovely setting and a challenging Ardeche!

4 of 5
Lovely setting although the outside of the property looked a little unloved. We had to clean the algae off the swimming pool steps and some of the slabbing around the pool was unfinished. The inside of the house had a lovely kitchen and sitting area. The bedrooms badly needed an update with the curtains and sheets. Although the floors and kitchen surfaces were clean there were many areas which had either dust or cob webs. When we arrived the weather was relatively warm, However the next three days were quite cool (never above 20 C). Night temperatures dropped as low as 5C during this period. Unfortunately during these evenings the sitting area became cool and we had to ring the owner to find out where the logs were for the log burner. At night the bed linen was inadequate for these low temperatures and we had to request duvets which were delivered promptly. This made the first few nights less comfortable than we would have liked. With temperatures on the low side we postponed our kayaking down the Ardeche. Instead we visited one of the many sites of interest. We spent a day in Avignon visiting the Palais des Papes and the Pont Saint Benezet. Well worth the journey of 50 minutes. With the weather improving we hired kayaks and did a relatively short journey from Vallon Pont d' Arc down to Chames. The kayaks were of the sit on type so we got thoroughly soaked. The following day having found our river legs we went for the biggy and kayaked from Chames to St Martin d'Ardeche. This was a mind blowing experience which I do not think I will be repeating. At one stage there appeared to be more people in the water than in kayaks. I was little surprised at the lack of information given by the hire companies - virtually none. The map provided went soggy after the second rapid and hence we had no means of foreseeing the hazards. There were occasions when after seeing the hazard on the rapid it was too late to take avoiding action because of the strength of the current. No crash hats were provided and no tips for survival. We then took it easy for a few days, visiting local vine yards and eating out. All very enjoyable. Why give it a 4 star - plenty to do in a beautiful environment; hence the title.
