Make a holiday rental villa or property in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France your home away from home

Located in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of southern France, Saint-Remy-de-Provence is a wonderfully picturesque village which still stands within the ancient stone walls which originally protected it. Today, Saint-Remy-de-Provence is a lively little town with a number of excellent restaurants and shops laden with local crafts, especially sun-flower decorated pottery, undoubtedly influenced by Saint-Remy-de-Provence’s favourite son, Vincent Van Gogh. Saint-Remy-de-Provence is an essential stop off on most tours of the Cote d’Azur, but there is far more to the town than you could possibly see in a day.

Things to do in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France

When you first arrive at your Saint-Remy-de-Provence holiday home, a great way to get your bearings is to take the half hour walk around the course of the original 14th Century town walls. The striking Port du Trou is one of the most recognisable sights in the town, and a great starting point for your discovery of the many shady squares, gargling fountains and exquisite restaurants.

On a Wednesday, the village comes to life as the weekly market rolls into town. There is a great atmosphere which descents on Saint-Remy-de-Provence during the market, and the pavement cafes and restaurants become the place to be seen. There are many excellent bargains to be found, both to stock the shelves of your self catering Saint-Remy-de-Provence villa and to take home for those that you have left behind. If you are running short of supplies by the end of the week, there is a smaller, food only market held on a Saturday morning too.

Throughout the year, Saint-Remy-de-Provence celebrates a range of festivals and events from the main Carnival in March to the Feria Provencale around August, when they have the running of the bulls. If you are lucky enough to be staying in Saint-Remy-de-Provence accommodation during one of these events, you will be treated to parades, dances, fireworks and fine local cuisine.

A holiday rental property in Saint-Remy-de-Provence acts as a wonderful base for walking holidays too. The village stands on the National Randonnee route GR6, which climbs into the centre of the Alpilles. The surrounding countryside has inspired artists and writers throughout the years, including Van Gogh, who painted over 150 paintings of Saint-Remy-de-Provence and the surrounding countryside. Mountain biking and horse riding holidays also thrive from Saint-Remy-de-Provence properties, and there are many routes through the countryside to try.

The village stands on one of the oldest archaeological finds in Europe, the 3rd century BC Roman city of Comptoir de Glanum. The most impressive monument still visible is the Triumphal Arch, which still stands intact.

Special Mas in a Tranquil Setting

5 of 5
I had good contact with the owner from the beginning, who responded to my questions quickly. As illustrated by the photos, the mas is spacious and eclectic, filled with interesting artworks and furniture. Our group of friends all had their own bedroom space, each one different but comfortable. As the temperature outside increased, the mas remained cool and refreshing inside. It was very useful to have 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets for the group. Part-way through the week we had a problem with a blocked toilet but the owner was fast to resolve the issue. Newly installed wifi worked fine inside but only really useful for checking email and light browsing. The kitchen was well equipped with glassware, plates and cutlery etc. I would suggest a small investment in updating pots & pans and a few other things like sharp knives etc Outside, the communal stone table was used everyday as well the charcoal bbq. Again, we did not find useful bbq implements at the house so this would be a nice addition. The garden was blissful and we didn't experience much in the way of mosquitos (taken care of by the bats maybe). The beautiful, large and well-sheltered pool was heavenly. It is very clean and well maintained. Overall, it is one of the best rental properties that I have experienced and I look forward to returning there one day.

Comfortable stone house in authentic Saint Remy setting walkable to town and sites

5 of 5
We rented this lovely little house during the first week of July 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The home is clean, well equipped and quite comfortable, with an unpretentious decor that is conducive to relaxation. The house is set in a grove of olive trees, with views of the nearby Alpilles hills in the background. The pool is modestly sized but quite sufficient for cooling off with a few laps. The upstairs room is air-conditioned, while the rest of the rooms on the ground floor stay cool thanks to thick walls and shutters. Our favorite feature of this property was its location: one can walk down to Saint Remy shops and restaurants, or up to the Glanum and Van Gogh asylum sites, in about 10 minutes, and the entire area is quite walkable. The owner was friendly and helpful as we planned our stay, and arrival and departure were well managed. Merci Madame!
