Nicolas-des-Eaux lies midway along the Blavet valley, in the French department of Morbihan. This sits on the south side of the peninsula of Brittany, across in the north-west of France. It is a small, pleasant village, that was once an important river port; now it is a much-loved tourist destination, sitting in the idyllic Breton countryside, not far from Carnac. Visitors on their holidays in Nicolas-des-Eaux have a good range of rental self-catering accommodation to choose from. The local valleys have many rustic gites available for rent, along with grander cottages, farmhouses and holiday apartments in the town itself.

The Blavet valley, with its gentle inclines, and meandering river, offer the holidaymaker a perfect canvas upon which to paint their daily activities. A long distance track stretches upstream to Pontivy, and downstream to the estuary at Hennebont, over 40 miles along which the visitor can walk, run, ride horses or cycle. The river itself is furnished with a number of canoe way stations, and it is a beautiful stretch of river to kayak down; the river is also said to offer great fishing. Further south, around Lorient, there are excellent beaches for sailing, surfing and sand yachting. Yachts for the sea, rather than the beach, can be hired at harbours of La Trinité-sur-Mer and Etel, whilst on your holidays in Nicolas-des-Eaux.

These megalithic monuments are some twenty miles south and are scattered in fantastical and mystical patterns across this misty landscape. It is believed they were placed in the megalithic era, some six thousand years ago and are an absolutely essential sight to be seen whilst in Brittany. Carnac also has gorgeous beaches of its own, some sheltered, some wind-blasted; but the towns of Lorient and Vannes offer some respite from the elements. Here you can sample the other delights of Breton culture - the excellent cheese, cider and fine food, as well as some of the unique crafts that Brittany is rightly famed for.

We arrived on a very hot day in June and the cool temperature inside the gite was a welcome relief. We were greeted and shown around, and everything was spotlessly clean and in perfect order. We had an amazing week of sunshine, and loved the outdoor pool. Our six month old baby swam several times a day in it, and never got too cold. Do make use of the boulangerie car that arrives at 8.20am in the morning! Listen out for the two beeps of the horn. We had drinks on several evenings on the terrace of the restaurant on the river, which were very nice. Renting an electric boat was great fun, and during our two hours we saw not a single other boat. Thank you so much for such a lovely week!

On arrival at Blavet River Cottage we were charmed by the beauty of the grounds and how lovely the cottage looked. The owners had left some essentials which was a lovely touch. The property was clean and tidy and very well equipped. We enjoyed kayaking and playing pool during our stay as well as swimming in the pool and walking in the grounds. A lovely tranquil holiday - well worth a visit!
